cam chain tensioner
01/13/08 at 11:47:07

Does anybody know what kind of metal the plunger on the cam chain tensioner is?  A friend of mine says he can do the mod for me, but needs to know what kind of metal it is.....

I think it's been hardened. Try to run a drill in it. That'll tell that story.

You should ask "Verslagen the Engineer".  After all, he invented "The Mod" Smiley

Drag a file over the bolt end of it.  You'll know if it's hardened.

He pm'd me awhile back as I didn't see this post.

It's mild steel that's case hardened.

Don't bother trying to drill this with a regular drill.

I drill these with a carbide drill, quite a show.  1st it cuts in with little chips that kind of spark when they let go.  Then the going gets real easy and streamers flow off the drill.  Then you hit bottom and it glows real brite with little chips again.

Great, glad you got it done.

A new product is availble for instant riding, called pre-made gasket. Grin

I would have loved some of that yesterday.  It's ok though.  I got home from work about an hour and a half ago, filled her up with 10w40, hopped on, and just got back from the test ride.    Cheesy  Had to make sure everything was working properly!  She hadn't been ridden in days!  Poor thing!  On inspection, my tensioner was almost all the way out, looking just like the pics quoting "Past time to do something" so I'm glad I kept after it and got it fixed.  Just need a new chain now...  Anyway, thanks again for all the help.

Did you do the extra hole mod too?Pinning it is good, but if it's ready to come out, once it hits the pin it wont be able to keep tension on the chain.

Actually, just the extra hole.  I'm ratcheted all the way in now!  My buddy didn't want to try and drill it.  It's ok though, as I'm going to be replacing the chain anyway.  Just can't do it right now.  $'s a little short.  Common' payday!  This just keeps me on the road 'till then.

My thoughts exactly, and when the next chain starts to wear out, I'll be ready.  (I'm planning on keeping my little thumper for awhile  Smiley)

Can anybody tell me what the cam chain tensioner mod is?
I just picked up a Savage that's in need of some attention, and one problem is a top end rattle - I'm guessing there's a problem in the chain area.  Not stripped her yet.
