Check "The Market place" on this site. Some one may be parting out an old Savage. Most of the parts are interchangeable between years.

Just scroll down to the forum jump and choose market place.

ebay is a good source of used parts.  Many engine/parts have been there.

If the old engine is seized - go looking for for an entire engine - I blew an engine by letting the oil get to low and got a newer engine on ebay for about $1,000 delivered. It took a couple of years to finish the project up but I am back riding the Savage and loving it once again!

Don't throw your old engine away - there are some parts in the electrical system you will have to switch over especially if you are going from an older Savage to a newer engine ( mine was an 89 four speed switched up to a 96 five speed)

Hope you got the seized bike for a reasonable price and will enjoy the conversion project

I once un-siezed an air  cooled  Porsche engine (low oil, overheated). I squirted penetrating oil in to each cylinder, waited an hour, and then slowly turned the engine at the flywheel with socket wrench and a steel pipe as a breaker bar. It took a while  and a lot of muscle to get 1 revolution, then it took a while to start (with lots of smoke), but it did get runnng.

The car ran fine after that until an oak tree fell on it while parked durring a thunderstorm.

You need to take it apart to see what is actually damaged.  It is possible that just a rebore may be all that is needed.  But without looking at the inside first there is just no way to know for sure.

I bought my '01 with the engine in pieces.  It wasn't that hard to put back together (but you really need a manual for the torque spec and how thing fit).  I will say, it is very helpful that one of my riding buddies is a machinist, and provided free labor honing the cylinder.  Grin

The local motorcycle salvage yard sold me a head ($200).  I had the option to buy the entire engine ('86 or '87) for $450.

If you don't know where your local MC salvage yard is, go to the dealer and ask.  They most likely will have someone that knows.

some people get all the deals! i'm in the market for a free savage too  Roll Eyes i bought a good used engine for our '96, from savagemom on this website, EXCELLENT deal, motor runs like a champ! dad rides it every day. the advantage here, is buying from family, you can be relatively certain you going to get a great deal, and you're getting what you expect, perhaps more  Smiley other sorces would be ebay or craigslist
