LS650 Battery
12/29/07 at 17:21:31

The Blake question begets these questions. 1. How long does the stock battery last?  HuhMine has lasted for 5.5 years. I remove the battery every year and top it off with distilled water, and recharge. This last time I had to charge it overnight to get it back to zero. I think this battery might be good for another year, but it is marginal. 2. Is there any other battery that fits this bike other than the YUASA YB14L-B2?  Huh I haven't found any.

There are other brands that fit.

My grandfater uesd to work at a local battery factory.  (Exide)  One thing he taught me is that the number in the battery model (14)  is a case type/size.  Letters can mean terminal type but it varies by manufacturer.

Note,  the PO of my bike got a "15" to fit.  It's a seal unit and was  "New" when I picked up the bike in July.   It's a real tight fit.  I'll keep it till it dies.   It's a "Deka" battery (also a company with local plant).

I have a BIG CRANK and it's hooked up to a BATTERY TENDER JR. I'm really happy with both.

Batteries last much longer with proper care.  If they take water, keeping them filled with distilled water is important.  Also, it's not good to keep them under constant charge.  Lead-acid type batteries actually last the longest if you keep them between 30% and 70-80% charge all the time.  That's not necessarily practical for most of us, but the best way to maintain appropriate charge levels is frequent riding!   Grin

Obvious stuff like keeping corrosion off terminals and cables in good condition will also help.

The two quickest ways to kill a battery are:

1) let it run out of watter
2) let it drain to 0 charge

Mine have lasted about 5 years. I charge on 2amps over night about every 2 months. Its funny I just put my charger on now and come in and this is on batterys. I took out the tool bag and hooked on to the positive and hooked the ground on motor fin , didn't pull out the battery.

Sometimes, when a bike has been parked and I'm working in the garage on something else, I'll switch the key over to the park position for an hour or so to slowly drain the battery.  Then I'll switch on the "tender" to recharge it.  Gives the battery a little exercise.

On the big Crank website it says that the battery will work for the LS650 from 1986-2002.  I have a 2003 and was wondering if anyone has sucessfully used this battery on models later than 2002?

Do you have the model number?  I tried to find it on their site and they don't have one at that price.
