I'm new to the forum and....

Just bought a 2003 Savage SL650. Great to learn on since I haven't ridden a motorcycle for over 50 years. Looking for lots of fun.

Question: when did they stop making the Savage SL650?

They didn't stop, they just changed the name to protect the innocent.  The LS650 Savage is now the S40.

Or they changed the name to appease the ignorant...in 2005.

But it is still a LS650, not SL650 Tongue

Thanks....

I finished the MSF course this weekend and would recomend it all novices. The level of awareness increases ten fold.

I think that Honda actually made a series of bikes with the "SL" designation...

...and as you'll learn as you hang around here a little longer, most of us don't think about the LS650 Savage or S40 as a beginner bike or for novices.  I hope you don't feel that way either.

...that's because most of are not beginners or novices  Cool

My reference to novices was not meant for the LS650, but for beginning riders. The MSF course used Suzuki 250s and others in the 250 range.

I know, I rode a Yamaha 225 when I took the course.  I highly recommend it too.

I'm just thinking about your "Great to learn on" statement.  I learned to ride bigger bikes long before I bought a Savage.

Welcome, you'll enjoy your ride..try to resist much modifications until you've had a good 3-5 months of riding, then you will know better what you want.  That SL thing, that's the Deutchebike 3 star brand. Only, as always, the germans' overengeneered the beast and gave it a third and then a forth wheel if you can believe it. Wink

Welcome.  I have a 2003 Savage also.   Wink  I've had several other bikes in my life, but this one is right for me at this time.  It's not a stepping stone, it's just the right thing for me at this point in my life.  You'll enjoy it, and this forum will make you appreciate it even more.

Wow! And I thought that 22 might be too long a gap! Respect: a braver man than I.

Thanks all for the wlcome....

The last time I rode was in 1954 in Tripoli, Libya with the donkeys and camels as traffic......sure there were cars, mostly taxis. No stop lights, just policemen on stands directing traffic at "major" intersections. We rented BSA 50cc (?) and circled the police stands for fun! There was a dirt running track at the British barracks where we'd race each other.

I'm enjoying the Savage, with plenty of power, just in the neighborhood for now.

I prefer to ride my S40 for our weekend day trips over the wife's Vulcan 750 mostly because of the drivers backrest, windshield, and highway pegs I've installed. The S40 is so much lighter too. The S40 is just plain fun to ride and that what riding is all about to me: It's the ride not the destination.
