Tool Box Lock Rekeying
12/13/07 at 09:35:26

As many of us have lost our box for one reason or another, I wanted to discuss how to rekey the lock to match your ignition key.

The tool box lock is pretty easy to mess with as it's not a very secure box anyway.

I'll add pictures later, as soon as I find the computer with the SD card slot.

1. Remove the box from the bike.
2. Flip it over and look at the back side of the lock.
3. Remove the 2 small screws on the back of the cylinder.
4. Remove the lock cam.
5. Carefully push cylinder out.
Note: The cylinder can be removed with or w/o the key.
And it's safer to remove it with the key, any key will do.
6. If you pulled the cylinder with the key you'll notice that all of the brass pins are even with the surface of the cylinder.
7. If you don't have the key for this lock, insert your ig key.
8. If any of the pins aren't flush with the cylinder, it won't turn.
9. Note which ones aren't flush.
10. Remove the key (hold your finger over the pins to keep them from shooting out).
11. If you have an even number of pins that don't go flush try swaping them.
12. Reinsert key and check if any of the ones sticking out are now flush and repeat step 11. as necessary.
13. What to do if you still got a few sticking out?  Remove them and the little spring, put it in an envelope and send them to me   Grin  just kidding.  Set it aside, all you need is one pin to lock for now.  More is better of course.
14. Reinsert the cylinder back into the lock.  There are 2 ways for it to go in, one way sticks out, the other the face of the cylinder will go flush with the lock.  The back side needs to be flush too.
15. Replace the cam and screws.
16. Replace the box back on the bike, smile you're done.   Grin

I did try the pins from a desk I had (no key).  The key for the desk is obviously smaller than the savage and it didn't fit.

I will take the cylinder to a local locksmith to see if I can get extra pins from him.  Hopefully it's a common configuration.

If a locksmith doesn't have one and you have an old time Chrysler Brand dealer in town, they used to have the ability to key new ignition switches and door locks common. I used to share the training material with my students as many folks used to drop off cars for a winter/summer tire switch and leave only the ignition key. We learned to pick trunk locks quickly to keep the work flow going. This was before the days of pull cables or solenoids on the trunk release. Max

I guess this explains why my tool box lock has a different keyway.
My '96 has a "E" as ig key (it's on the key)
What's yours?

Went home and rekeyed my box lock with only 3 pins.
None of the spare cylinder pins matched my key so I had to drop out 2.
Now I have a spare "C" keyway.

Absolutely no idea.

The PO replaced the box w/o replacing the latch at the bottom.

And after it fell off, I bought another off fleabay with my "E" key (steal $18 total with tool kit)   Grin
