Recently, engine hasn't been starting. It turns over but never catches. Just in case, I checked the battery at autozone and its still good. I figured that its either the spark plug or the carb, so I pulled the plug out and lo and behold, its soot black and doesn't spark. (I've also had some mixture issues recently, which probably explains the blackness.) "Great," I thought as I went to buy a new spark plug, "I'll just swap this out and be good as new." Not so, however. When I put the new plug in, it didn't spark either and the engine still doesn't catch. Theres nothing obviously loose or disconnected. Any ideas?

Question.......did you do the "hold the plug to a ground point" (metal without paint) and check for spark before putting it in?

Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.....but have to ask to check off possiblities.

Needs a complete circuit. Like thumperclone says, holding it with bare hands could light up you life (pun intended). CDI..... another name for the ignitor, or Electronic Ignition control module.....

If OK: unscrew the spark plug cap from the wire and check the wire for spark . If there is a spark- blame it on the spark plug cap. If there is no spark- ask again and somebody will help.

I went to try starting it one last time before leaving it over winter break- when I hit the starter, the power would cut and flicker twice. After two or three tries it cranked but really slowly battery's toast?

Also, if it's the un-sealed type (has little plugs/caps to fill water) , have you checked water level latey?
