Rear axial bolt orientation

First let me state that Clymers says the nut should be on the left side of the bike.

OK, correctness out of the way...

My question is can it be on the right side instead?
Why? Cause I can't get it out without hitting the muffler.

Here's some back ground from my Vdub days. Had a '63 Vdub truck. The rear axials had these big a$$ nuts holding the wheels on. Both left and right thread. They were orientated so that if the bottom of the nut hit the curb, it would tighten.

In comparison, the savage's nut would loosen if it did the same thing.

What do you think?

If someone has a band new one that hasn't had the rear tire off, they could check. I have to sneak my axle between the bottom of the hard bag and top of the non stock muffler so it takes some extra work. Max

SHAME ON YOU, Verslagy! You didn't check your CD. There are 6 "Rear Axle" photos to answer your question Tongue

Our nuts were on the left side when new ('00 and '01).

Since then they've been on the right side to allow better clearance with the muffler. The nuts are self locking, and I see no reason they can't be reversed if you wish. They stay tight either way.

AND if the axle binds, meaning that the bearings seize, do you really want the nut to get tighter? I'm thinking that you're gonna be looking for a trailer anyway Tongue

I had a choice... post a question and eat or open every reference on the subject. Since I couldn't hear myself think for all the noise and it wasn't the thumper... I choose the former.

Beside the answers are enlightening, I didn't think about a seized axle, only running aground upon high curbs. Grin

Well, now you are aware of a 3rd option. You can eat and surf through your CD next time... Grin

...after all, it makes no sense to move the muffler or drop the swingarm just to get the axle out. I've been running my axle "backwards" without any problems for about 5 years now. It is a no-brainer.
