Carb Mod
11/21/07 at 07:13:42

Hi I'm about ready to do the carb mod but have questions.

Where can I get the different size spacers?  Do I buy a kit somewhere?

What size are those screws that everyone complains about?  I would like to have some new ones on hand to replace the old ones?

What size drill bit for plug removal?

What size jets do I have now on an 06 s40 (#145??)?

I will probably be putting on a cone filter and sportster muffler later does this mean I will need to rejet the main?

clymer manual is all you need.  Use 3/16 drill bit ,drill in 1/8 inch.Put sheet metal screw in and pull out with a visegrip. 145 main jet is stock.

Ok, I'm orderiting it now.

Can I get a carb kit with the jets and spacers somewhere?

Does anyone know the size of the screws that commonly get damaged?

Howdy Back Joe:

May I humbly suggest, as one newby to another, that you use the search function.  It is one of the options above.  All of the info you are looking for has been posted and is here.  It will be worth your time to do some back reading on each of the forum topics.

For more specific advice on jet selection you might want to add the elevation at your locale, and any other mods you have planned. Is your goal in carb mods to reduce back fires? improve power? or?

I might also suggest the Thumper CD offered at the top of this forum as a companion to the Clymer's manual.  The CD offers color photos in much greater detail then the manual.  Mine is on my Christmas list.

My bike is a '95 LS, with carb mods, A Jardine muffler (not), new Metzlers, An iridium sparkplug, a magnetic drain plug- all with input and advice from this forum  Seat mods, Progressive shocks and the Tkat fork brace are next on the list.  Owning a Savage is a journey in many ways.  And I'm lovin' the trip

Adios, David

Yea, Hardly, I did that.  I found a lot about the carb mod but it didn't answer all of my questions though.   Besides, I'm lazy.

If people don't want to repeat the same information maybe they can point me to some previous posts, that answer my questions.

Oh, and most of my riding will be under 1,000 ft unless I figure out a way to put wings on my bike.  Grin
And my goal is for "MORE POWER".  If it stops backfiring that will be a plus.

Thanks,

~Joe

You gotta remember something about asking questions and searching posts for the information you want.  Hardly, has a very valid point.

First, many people have gone through a lot of trouble on this forum to post information.  They have created extensive topics with photos in the tech section.  That takes a lot of time to do.  It might take time to find it, but it is there.

Second, think about this...the membership on this site has more than doubled this last year alone.  Over 10K now.  Some members don't have bikes and leave, but most who stay, have a Savage40.  They all have the same bike, with the same parts and the same problems.  That means that they ask the same questions...over and over and over and over.  Sometimes the questions are "newbie related" and sometimes they are seasonal issues like using the choke.  What you don't realize is that your bike and your interests just are not unique at all.  I've been in here over 4 years, and I can't even count how many times I've heard your questions.

Third, if you are lazy, then why shouldn't everyone else just act the same as you?  Right?

In truth, most members aren't lazy and they are willing to help.  It just would be easier if new members would try to find their own answers to old questions.  After all, we can tell you what to do, but we can't turn the wrench for you.

Remove spacer alltogether, stick in 152.5 main jet. That should work. You can always change back or forth, but I'll bet it"ll run great Smiley

Ditto on the 152.5 main, seems to work best with the sporty muffler. For a bit more growl with the exhaust try drilling a 3/8 inch hole in the sporty muffler baffle. Removing the spacer in the carb might make the bike run rich on the bottom end, try one or two small washers in place of the spacer, I think I used two #4 washers on my carb. Aim for around 1/2 the spacer thickness. To get the carb screws out after stripping out the philip heads take a file and flat side the screw heads so you can get ahold of them with a small pair of vice grips. There is a lot more info using the search function, luck and have fun with it

I've already searched and read the tech section and it tells me how to do the mod.  That is great, but I can't find the size of those darn screws on the search.

Your going to make me pull the carb, bugger the screws and then have to go to the store and match them aren't you.  I have to go a long way to get stuff like that, and I may have already downed a beer or 2 before I leave.  Do you guys want me out drinking and driving?  It would be nice to already have it on hand.  Can't someone just give me a hint where to look.

I'm still not clear on where to get the different size spacers either, I did find the dynojet kit but I didn't see any spacers in it.  If you could add this stuff to the tech section it would be nice.

SavageGreg, I was just kidding.  I'm really not all that lazy.  But I don't think it would hurt someone to come over and turn the wrench for me.

If you guys don't want to help, that's fine.  I'm going to figure out how to add that missing cylinder to my bike.  If you see me riding around on my V-twin 1300 Savage don't bother asking me how to do the "Double Cylinder Mod", because I'm not telling.

I'm going to do a full write up on the procedure with pictures and everything.  Then I'm going to bury it.  Bury it with a shovel.  Then bury the shovel.  When you ask me where it is, I'm going to tell you to search for it.
