Don't feel bad, out of all the bikes I got, the Savage is the only one I have to pull the clutch in to start. That switch has got to go. I almost tore the tank off to check wiring when I realized which bike I was trying to start.     Hutch

For me it's usually the kill switch!  If it gets bumped moving the bike around the garage or off the trailer I can have the devil's own time till I remember to check the darned thing!

Yeah, my first Suzi was a Bandit.  That clutch-in switch is annoying...if it is cold, and i am trying to get my gloves on, I don't want to have to wait to get the machine going.... Let me tell you, all the subsequent ones get that switch knocked right out of the wiring diagram.  Solder them wires, heat shrink 'em, and call it good.

Minority opinion:

I think it is good practice to start all motorcycles with the clutch lever pulled.

Less strain on the starter and battery, for one.  That's the main reason I do it.

Also, I suppose this practice could prevent a surprise jolt forward if a safety switch or two fail and you are trying to start the bike in gear.  That one's a long shot, though!

Not quite a long shot. Many members here have had the safety switches conk out on them.

Hmmmm  ... The relay I just put in works nicely.   If the neutral light is on, the clutch lever does not need to be pulled in.  It can be, but no longer a requirement.

Note to all, I've had the engine case split during my rebuild.  In neutral not much of a load change over the clutch in.  Also, the neutral light is not an adjustable thing like many other bikes have, so if the light is on it's in neutral.  And, all the other interlocks are still in place, in gear, kickstand etc etc.

I took pictures but haven't had a spare moment to post something.

When i first got my savage, i drove it up to blockbuster the first day to get a movie (any excuse to ride.) After i got back out to the parking lot, i couldn't get the bike to start to save my life. I tried everything.... killswitch on/off, in nuetral, in gear, it didn't matter.  I was extremly frustrated and a little embarrased.... Then i realized the kickstand was down.... What an idiot... I drove away releaved but with my head hung in shame.
