I bet, You forgot to mention, that the muffler is debaffled /straight pipe/.
I had the same issue and i loved it and I left it alone. At night at speeds about 75mph and above, I had more than a foot of flame coming from the exhaust. The only thing that I did not like was the gas mileage.
I have SE II with baffle on my other Savage and there is a lot less flame - more like a glow.

Mine is a rock stock S40 with a stock sportster muffler. It is a straight thru pipe but does has perforated section inside with, I presume, packing material. Maybe the scoop I installed is causing high pressure in the air box thus causing more flame. My gas milage isnt as good as I expected (around 38-40 mpg at 70-75mph) but with my 6'2" 295lbs azz on it I cant complain. Well I wish it had a bigger tank, having to gas up every 90-100 miles kinda sucks, and I wish the bike had a 6 speed.

Do the chain conversion.  Huge improvement.
