Oil leakage question
10/22/07 at 05:23:09

Hi, I like to introduce myself here. Nickname is al, and I just bought a '90 savage . Looks like a very nice bike to me. It needs a bit of work though.  It does not run, that is, it  does not want to idle. No problem, I think it will be in the carb area somewhere. Removing, cleaning and mounting it again will improve that I think.

Another problem is oil leakage. Near the head (and that may be a problem of some rubber plugs I think), but also through the oilseal (it seems) of the gear shift axis.

Could anyone of you tell me if that problem can be solved without the removal of the engine from the frame? Maybe by drilling al tiny hole in the oilseal (is that the correct word for it?) and get it out and put the new replacement in? Or do I have to open the engine and remove it first?
Thanks in advance.
Btw: My English is not so very good, so if I make any mistakes, sorry... Wink

The one in the head is pretty common, just a few hours work to fix it.

The oil seal by the shifter?  Sure?

Not sure about drilling holes in anything.  Can you post a photo?

Thanks for your fast reaction!
I think it's the shifter as you call it, it's where the axis where you change gear with goes into the gearbox.
I get the bike this week and only then can I really check it, but that is wat the previous owner told me.
you can see the leakage on a photo, but see my answer below....

Yes, I have a photo, but how do I do that? Can I upload one or can I only link to one?

Refresh my memory here......isn't the gearshifter oil seal in the small removeable gear shifter cover? ? ? ?

Very good point.  You are right.  It is in that cover.

Now just to find out if that is where it really IS leaking.

Could be leaking from the drive shaft seal or the starter seal too.

You have to link to the photo on a web hosting site.

Under the starter is a drain hole that leads to a drip around there.

If the starter was removed and replaced, the o-ring could've been cut causing the leak.

I suggest taking off the slotted cover over the output pulley.  It doesn't have any fancy seals but does have rubber washers on the top bolt.  Either a 8mm or 10mm socket.  You will be able to see where the leak is much better.

Thanks for your reactions you all. The suzuki will be in my backyard this evening if everything works out as planned. I'will try to figure out where the leakage is as soon as possible. I will take some pictures and show them here of course! Smiley
