high pitched noise
10/18/07 at 15:25:25

I have a 2002 Savage with 4200 km (2400 miles) on it.  It makes a high pitches noise whether in gear or in neutral going down a hill.    I "think" it comes from the back. Could this noise be coming from the belt?

Only going down hill?  ?   Not coasting to a stop on the flat?

EDIT:  With brakes on????

It's gotta be muffler bearings.

The words "noise and sound" are difficult to figure out.  Is it a squeal, a rattle, a thump, a vibration...(you get the picture)?

Does it make this noise at about the same RPM in each gear?

Does it seem like it comes from the left side?

Check to see if the upper belt guard is making contact with the front pulley cover on the engine.  Check it with someone sitting on the bike to compress the shocks a little.  Often a slight bit of misalignment can cause these 2 parts to vibrate together.

If it looks like it might be at this place, wedge a small piece of paper in it and take a test ride.  If that fixes it then you know you need to adjust the belt guard a bit....

(Oh yeah, have you by any chance removed the front pulley cover recently?  If not then just forget this question.)

Thumperclone:

What kind of belt dressing do you use?  I've read on other posts that belt dressing should be avoided because it will attract dirt and wear out the belt.  Have you had any problem with grit accumulating on the belt after you've used belt bressing.  I get a lot of belt noise and have been considering using belt dressing.

B
1st and formost... insure your tension and alignment are correct(search tech section)
the dressing i have is made by silkolene lubricants
TWIN POWER brand  got it at the local non make specific dealer(mostly used bikes w/new parts store)think your loco hardly store carries this brand..
no probs w/ grit wear etc..is a (think)silicone based
product..
some here use a bee wax product me thinks that would catch grime but posters have said otherwise..
also are both pullys torqued to specs??
