I found this problem on both our ’06 LS650’s.  The clutch cable connects to the release arm by a U-shaped stamped-metal bracket.  The cable end is located in this bracket by a locking tab that bends inwards.  This is said to be prone to breaking after repeated folding.  

Anyways, on our bikes the cable worked outwards from its central locating hole into the slotted area and spread the U bracket while pushing the lock tab out.  Naturally cable tension is the driving force.  My fix was to push the cable (with slack) back through the central locating hole and straighten the U bracket flare.  Then the locking tab was bent back in at an acute angle.  Let’s see if this is a permanent fix to a rather weak design.

Even if the tab is missing, You should never have a problem if You keep the proper cable free play. There is nothing unusual about the design. A lot of makes and models are using the same way to attach the cable to the actuating arm.
