Side mounted Air Filter? Any Suggestions?

I know I've seen them, on Savages even.

Any ideas on what I could use to make a side-mount for my k&N cone filter?

90* would work, but I think I'm going to hit it with my leg.

What I would like is a U bend that would work (keep the air filter parallel to the bike frame?

Any ideas on what I could use? I know you guys have done it before... A little help would be appreciated.

I took the bottom of an 1 1/2" PVC P- trap ( the black stuff used for rough plumping ) and cut the treaded end almost off, the o/d was 2 1/4 on both ends. Get a new hose clamp and then cut off the old filter hose to fit. Take off the seat as it if hard to wiggle the parts in. When done it fits real tight and will not hit your leg.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

I got the 1 1/2" ABS plastic p-trap from the hardware store. I cut the original rubber to form the new connecter then installed my cone filter.

One problem.... The actual K&N cone (RS-1250) is about 1" longer and nearly 1" bigger in diameter than the cone filters you used on your bikes.

It fits, but it's not a good fit. The additional girth pushes against the clutch cable as well as the speedomter cable. The additional length makes it ALMOST touch the cylinder head.

CRAP.

Back to what it was before until I can score a smaller filter... Here's to rejetting...

Reply #13 - 10/03/07 at 10:24:41 Here is whats stamped on the hose clamp on mine. 57-76 2 1/4"-3" 3X NO 40 The box had some MMs on it but can't remember what, its probably the 57 and 76. I bought it off the shelf at the bike shop WD used to work at.

Impressions after a day of riding:

The side moutned air filter definately changes the tone of the engine. Under throttle, it sound MUCH more aggressive than with the cone attached directly to the carb.

The whistling sound I was hearing has been greatly diminished vs. having the cone direct to the carb.

The only down side is the size of the filter itself.

When I come to a complete stop, my leg pushes against the edge of the filter (when I have my legs down and am holding the bike stationary)

I ordered the smaller cone filter this morning and hope to have it by the weekend (maybe.. kinda sorta).

In the mean time I have noticed something odd.

When I am upshift to third gear, especially if I do it at lower RPM's, the whole bike seems to pound with every stroke of the engine, but only if I give it alot of throttle. If I gently roll on, it isn't noticible at all. (Where I noticed it most was pulling through a corner where I had to slow to below the speed limit. Rather than downshift, I give it throttle. It's not lugging, but it feels odd..)

Any thoughts?
