Sorry to bug you, im the newbie with the cam chain that just went out.

I got the motor torn down and chain in place, but not mounted, any tips on how to the the chain around both top and bottom gears without messing up the teeth? im just afraid of messing something up

and another thing, i set the piston to tdc yesterday, think it will still be ok? im worried about sagging or something.

Reply #1 - 09/28/07 at 18:28:21 i think i just put the chain on the bottom gear first, then the top. sometimes the piston will drop after sitting, but i never had that problem. the hardest part for me was actually getting it in time. probably took at least ten tries to get everything lined up.

Reply #3 - 09/28/07 at 19:14:16 Have to remove top gear , it's "pinned" and only goes back on one way. Then get chain on lower gear. Do the Top-Dead-Center marks line up. Then with minor pressure push top gear (with chain on it) back on. It is extremely important to get the TDC line up correct.

Remove the gear from the cam itself and slip it into the chain, then replace the gear. What I did was put the piston on TDC then placed the cam with both lobes pointing down. You then should be timed. (It worked for me)

dudes!!!!! thank you all so much for putting up with me, just got the bike back together (well almost all the way, enough to start it) and it started perfectly, first kickover! no ticks no noises, beautiful purr right off the bike..
So thank you all for putting up with my bickering, i love this bike now, it's so simple and amzingly powerful...

One question.. If my timing was off... what would it sound like? i dont want to run till i have that questoin answered... lol... But i think i did good, tdc's and all, i was anal!!! thank you again
