that d@mn cv carb again! SOLVED

as some may remember, we have had some problems with reliability with our cv carb, since day 1. problem found! it would work fine one day and not the next, it always idled, but would quit working mid-range. dad and i were going through the carb with a fine tooth comb, we had discovered that the needle would stick in the jet. when we dropped the needle jet out, along with it came a small particle of solder! a close inspection of the solder showed signs of rubbing(shiny spot). appearantly, the little bit of solder would occasionally lodge itself in the needle jet in such a manner as to stick the needle. take the carb off, rotate it in place, etc, the solder would relocate until later, the carb would work, for awhile.  dad has run 4 tanks of fuel through the bike since taking it 2 weeks ago, with out a single problem, except the sore face from "smilies per miles".

I am glad you found the problem, I do wonder though, who was soldering in the carb???? Thats just wierd. I did find a bad rattle in a 2 ton truck once. Some jasshonkie thought it would be cool to drop an empty coke bottle in a door before slapping the trim panel on.
Found a piece of pork chop bone in a copier once,.Never saw solder in a carb,, That's a first. Lets hope that's the last.

Regardless of the source of the little piece of solder, this episode shows once again the carb demons attack you the only way to really get to the bottom of the problem is to take the thing apart and check every part, clear every passageway, make sure nothing is overlooked.  Once that is done you can be sure that the carb will respond the way it is supposed to when you make adjustments.

solder is used to plug the bores when the carb is drilled at mfr,
