Looks okay, I guess. No obvious distortion...
Oops... Little bit of polishing down on the bottom corner. The piston channel is still round...
Same deal with the piston. Bit o' surface abrasion...
Looks reusable to me...
As far as warming the oil first, I'll just use my cast iron skillet. Needs to be re-seasoned anyway
Man, that chain is loose...

Looks in good shape, ready to upgrade.
FYI, when it occurs, wear in the housing bore would be visable if you had turned the housing just a little more to look down the bore in picture #2. And ovaling would be evident on edge of the bore.

Yeah, that slightly shiny area on the side of the piston looks like it was beginning to wobble in the cylinder a bit but there is no
obvious
distortion to the cylinder. I'd send it off to Verslagen1 for modding.

I have another pict of the bore straight on- still as round as can be determined by the naked eye. The wear inside the bore pretty much matches that on the piston.
I'm gonna have to liquidate some assets before I can do the upgrade. $$$'s a little tight right now (considering my weekly gasoline expendatures just tripled
)

I guess she's been benched for the rest of the season...
Guess what's been leaking?
Yep, you got it...
It was just sitting in it's little cradle. No seal at all. Nice.
In my limited experience, I'd say the cam shaft sprocket looks fine...
Figured since I had it out and easily accessible, I'd pull out the starter. Now I know why it's called The Black Hole. Just plain nasty...

There's some pine straw, leaves, and God only knows what else down in there, all soaked in 20 years worth of oil and road grime.

Make sure when you removed your speedo cable the O-ring didn't fall in there.

It's not hard to check.
You might need to replace the gaskets for the header or the clutch cover. So having these on hand is a plus.
You need to drop the oil and filter.
Remove right footpeg mounting plate.
Remove the header and muffler.
Disengage the clutch cable.
Remove the clutch cover.
Eyeball the adjuster.
You need to do something if the plunger is out 18mm to the shoulder of the plunger.
Replace in reverse order.
Clutch cover gasket may need a little sealant around the oil path at the top of the cover.
If you got to go further, it's a lot more effort but not difficult.
OY!
I'm gonna have to do all that to replace the cam chain?
Hats of to you jkhulon73, that just looks like a bit too much challenge! Think I'll start using weights, looks like I'll need it!

Oh, it's still in the cable. I made darn sure of that! I dropped it last time I had the tank off and it took me half an hour to find it. (Lighting in the garage sucks)

Engine only weighs 119 lbs by itself. I probably didn't need to pull it to replace the cam chain, but there some other things I needed/wanted to do with it (like clean it and paint it)

Well....that's more then I weigh!! So it's a good thing I don't need to take it out to do the cam.

Wahine, you just need to find a big Samoan friend to lift the engine for you.
I'm 6' and 220#. When I went to my brother's funeral in Oahu a couple of years ago, I got hugged and lifted up to my tiptoes by a half dozen women. Lotta love in that crowd.

That's just to check the cam chain, a lot more fun to replace it.

IW,,I've seen what you can do. You can replace the cam chain. Maybe different tools to buy, maybe a couple different diagrams( I like using a cardboard box & slicing X's in it with an exacto & drawing the case, sticking each bolt in an X on the outline, keeping all the bolts in their respective holes & doing the same with the head cover) The one that HAS to be in before it goes together? I put that one thru backwards with a note on it.. I didnt USED to have to do stuff this way. I have changed the frames on 2 ford pickups & dropped bolts in buckets & used no notes, but that was using a whole different set of brain cells.. like 25+ years ago.
