Steering stop
09/23/07 at 13:29:25

My wife dumped her bike and the handle bar dented the tank. I cannot find what stops the bars from turning so far back. I want to fix this before I replace the tank. Any ideas?

Hi wolfen,
You can use a limiter/ or adjustable stop. The original limiter is at the headset of the savage (the Triple Trees can't turn over this point). You can add on a new limiter allowed more place between Tank and Bars. But rememer : 1st: if the Bike dump - the bar will be bend over the limiter and you have a bulge too (but not so deep) Roll Eyes
2nd: to range you require more tractions.  Sad

I think Thunderbike have some one for the roadstar.

Ciao Leo

The bottom triple tree has the stops built into the top of it (see below). They contact the frame at the neck. You could have metal welded to either the frame to make the bike have less turning radius, but you don't want to limit it more than you absolutely have to. I've considered doing it just as insurance, but at the moment, both of my Savages are set up with bars that clear the tanks. BTW, I've been told that in Europe welding on the frame is not allowed!

Thanks guys, I see what is broken. The stop on the frame, not on the triple tree broke. When I take the tank off this winter to fix it, I will have a piece welded on to the frame. The actual top of the triple hits the tank, not the bars. This really shouldn't be a problem on the right side as much as if it were on the left.
Thanks again and I will let her know not to dump it and hurt herself again Savage Greg. She has been riding 1 week...ever see your wife wipe out right behind you? Not a great feeling....

99% sure , the stop on the frame is damaged. Just about all the Savages that go thru my hands have this problem. This is a very easy fix if You know  a good welder.
Just bring it to the welder and show him the little prong that sticks from the front of the steering neck and ask him to uild it back so the bars don't touch the tank. He will figure it out. You will have to remove the tank and it will be a good idea to disconnect the batery and the CDI.
It should not cost You more than 40 bucks.
