The primary drive nut has left handed threads.  Turn the wrench clockwise to to lossen the drive gear nut. Feel free to chime in if I am incorrect.

Thanks Strafford, much appreciated  Smiley Smiley I was trying to turn it counterclockwise for a while there, but decided to stop before I messed something up.

Left hand (backward threads) is correct.  I did the same on mine.

It's one of those "aww SH.T , now what do I do" moments,....until you dig out the manual and read........ (how un-american.....)

Well, I got it.  Grin Now I am ready to put her back together once the rest of my parts come in tomorrow. Thanks for the advice on the bolt direction. My Clymer's manual apparently has missing information. Do you believe the silly thing doesn't even tell how to get the camchain out?

I think I probably added about 20lbs of torque to that nut before I decided I had better ask someone about the direction.  Embarrassed Glad I did.  Smiley

I had to buy a new cam chain gear because I whoops that one with a new Snap-on 1/2 dr air wrench. Broke the gear into pieces. It most defninitely is left hand threads, turn clockwise to loosen. Max

In that case Max, I am very glad I don't have any air tools, or I would probably had done the same thing.

I was right, the Clymer's manual says nothing on how to completely remove the camchain from the crankcase. Glad this site is here to fill in the gaps that the Clymer's have left.

Looks like there are enough threads exposed to see the direction of the pitch. If I follow the "Groove" that makes the threads & I have to rotate clockwise to go from the end of the shaft toward the engine, then going the other way will loosen the nut. The opposite direction just means gotta go the other way to loosen.

Factory service does have comment about thread direction.

It has in a box:
________________________________________
NOTE:
Primary drive gear nut has a left-hand thread.
