wont start with new battery

I just put a new battery in my bike, and it still wont start. It turns over and even sputters exhaust a bit, but nothing else happens
what should I look at next?

How old is the fuel? Easy enough to check for fuel, Loosen the drain on the bottom of the carb bowl. Catch whatever comes out, in a clear container, look for corruption & water.
To get the sparkplug out, the tank has to come off. But, that comes after making sure its getting fuel, & not water or rust.
Year model? Miles?

From what I've read here, with that mileage, the cam chain may well be loose enough to have jumped a tooth or two when you were bump-starting it. Just a thought.

You can pull the plug & valve adjust plates & bring it to TDC & see if the cam is in the right place. That will give you a chance to check the plug, and the cam at the same time. and you can check valve settings, too. But, you will need to pop the side off & have a look at the cam chain tensioner, too.

That may not be enough for normal running. You may need to either add more gas or set the petc0ck to RES.

I know mine doesn't like to start with only 2 inches of gas! I think it needs the extra pressure of a full tank of gas. It always seems to run better after I just filled her up!

I already tried it on RES, but Ill try to get some gas for it.
Another thing, I tried to get the drain screw loose, but the tools at hand wouldnt do. However, they did pick up some of the stuff that seems to have built up around it, and I would describe it as orangish brown (oil!
)

If RES doesn't work, adding more gas shouldn't help... unless it's just bad gas or has a lot of crap and adding more dilutes or loosens the crap. Then it could temporarily mask the real problem. You may have crap in your fuel or even varnish in your carb. I'm with those who've suggested draining the float bowl and seeing what you get out. You may need to clean the carb and possibly drain the tank too. If you drain the tank, remove the petc0ck and inspect/clean it too. Additionally, I always recommend an inline fuel filter be installed in the fuel line. They are inexpensive insurance. If you get a clear one, you can see if fuel is flowing and if the filter needs to be replaced (or cleaned, for some).

is there some kind of procedure list on the boards that indicates how to properly disassemble the carb and petcock for cleaning?

Actually I believe there is in the tech/ref section. I used it myself when I was re-jetting my carb and before I got my Clymer's manual. (Though I have noticed several missing items in the Clymer's such as how to completely remove the cam-chain from the block. That's right, I'm going to be harping on that for awhile.)
Anyway, yes there is procedures in the tech/ref section. Good luck.
