Early model carb questions, please?
09/15/07 at 15:07:10

Hi,

Does anyone know if the early ones-the 80`s models- had/have the same backfiring and lean issues?

Also does any one know if and what years used a standard needle with a moveable/ multi notched shaft instead of the  white spacer?

Thanks,

Bill

The 80's models had a larger main jet (#155) and a leaner pilot (#47.5) and an adjustable slide needle.  I think they had less lean issues.

Thanks, think I`ll see about the adjustable needle and a retro fit. Here in RI we`re close to sea level and its cool, but that tends toward leaness.

I`ve rejetted, shaved the spacer, messed w/the screw and tho the pops are a lot less, I still get surprised by the cherry bomb effect when I don`t pay enough attention. I can still tweak another round w/ larger jets and a thinner spacer, but laying my hands on an adjustable needle-and the right size needle jet would be a plus.

I`ll try studying the fische some more but if I knew for sure what exact year had that set up, that`d be cool.

Maybe somebody knows?

Thanks again,

Bill

Very interesting, so the early ones pop too....gotta have an inherantly lean carb situation. I`m thinking Mikuni must have some parts that would richen the primary circuit w/o soaking the higher ranges.  It`s a B40, which is kinda large for a CV, and an old one at that. I`m gonna look around.

Got only one pop on the last ride today, not a cherry bomb either, but I did roll out the screw to about 2 1/2 turns. Time for some thinking.

Thanks, guys

my '87 Pops and bangs a lot .I think I have a stock carb and I have a very open Supertrapp with the oldfeller airfilter (like a k&N) I have tuned it as best as I can and it goes very well.  I think there are a few flat spots if  I look for them.  I ride it fairly hard and it bangs on deceleration. I don't really mind it myself as it lets the cell phone dwellers know that I am around
