First major maintenance $$$$
09/13/07 at 13:23:47
After putting 22,000 miles on my 2003 Savage and never doing any maintenance other than change oil and filter. I decided to take the bike to the dealer to have the valves adjusted, spark plug changed, cam chain and tensioners replaced, front brake pads replaced, rear brake shoes replaced and both tires replaced ( Already had new tires which I bought at another place.) Just wanted to let everyone know the cost $1013.00. I will do all the work myself the next time! Except for the cam chain.

How much is parts? How much is labor? How many times can anyone spend that kinda $$ on a bike worth what these little dudes are worth? If you strat doing the valves, you will be ready when the cam chain comes along. I was scared of the valves at first, now, hey, no biggeee, the cam chain? That was scary, first time, now, I dont think It will scare me to go in there. You'll do fine,, once ya get into it.

Did they let you know in advance how much it was going to cost? Stuff like this make it tougher on honest shops.

I haven't picked the bike up yet. I will post the parts and labor cost whenever I get the invoice.

At $65-85 per hour that sounds about right including parts.
Just imagine if you had done little parts of that on weekends by yourself...spark plug, oil and brakes, for example. Even the cam chain is just a Saturday afternoon "drinking & thinking" if you are prepared
Now, let's see if they reinstall the rubber plug/cap correctly or if it starts leaking later on...ours did.
