Ok, I thought I had it. I'd taken the head cover off with no problem and I thought I was in the clear. Everything is ready to pull the head and I find that it won't clear one of the long studs. The right rear to be exact. From reading on the forum I'd thought that if I got that far it would be a cinch. '87 650 savage. Anyone have any input. thanks

Use a stud puller or double nut arrangement and remove that stud. Do whatever and the reverse the process to get it back together. Personally I would not use one of those gripper type stud pullers, but the collet type as I wouldn't want to put stress marks on the stud. Same goes with vice grips or channel locks. The collet type threads down the existing threads and then the collet is squeezed down to prevent it from turning so you can back the stud out. Not cheap, but does not damage the stud. Use the longest nuts you can find, not the head ones, to double nut and jam the nuts together, you should then be able to back the stud out. Max

remember if you don't want to scratch the frame to put on tape on it (duct tape??)

And make sure that you get a pillow to lay your head on, too

I actually found that if you remove all the bolts and tilt the engine to the left side (leaving wiring intact), that you can remove the cylinder too.
