What is the correct shifting speed?

I've done a few searches to see if I"m shifting at the correct time or if I'm revving the bike too much. but only found a few posts that didn't say much about the correct speeds.
I think because my carb is a mess I'm shifting differently.
I change into 2nd around 20, 3rd around 30 4th around 40 and 5th after 50. Does that sound about right?

Go with what you were doing. The engine lugs if you are shifting 4 th at 30 and 5th at 35.

I think the owners manual says 12, 30, 40, 45. Or it may say something else. Wink

Reply #4 - 09/12/07 at 13:19:07 My personal up shift points are 15, 25, 35, 45. My personal down shift points are 40, 30, 20, 10. This seems to feel good for me and the bike. Now if I am accelerating onto the Interstate, I will shift to 4th at around 40 and to 5th at around 50.

here are the shift points as explained by dave f on another forum

1st - Shift up when the bike stops accelerating.
2nd - shift up when the mirrors begin to buzz.
3rd - shift up when bugs stop bouncing off your face and begin to splatter.
4th - shift up when your mouth suddenly fills with air and begins to function as a air scoop.
5th - shift up when you forget there is no sixth gear.

thats about all you need to know of shift points.

I am running a Cone filter, Dyna Muffler and rejet.

Aaaaaa I shift a little higher speeds .... like 40's into fifth.....but I have a tach, ...... Some where around 3K rpm's if I'm just commuting easy, Around 4K RPM if I'm a little rammy. 5K if I'm showing off to a c0cky cager or HD. Hey, maybe that's why I have a hard time hitting 50 mpg......

Owner's manual says Red line is 6500 RPM (section about engine break-in) but even when I'm really gunning it, I only get to around 5K to 5.5K rpm's before my mechanical senses say shift ..... and they are yelling real loud "shift shift SHIFT!!!!"

I agree, if I would shift into 5th at 31 mph the little beast wouldn't like it. I go by the sound of the engine reving and it seems to work out as 12-15, 30, 40, 45+ and shifts smoothly.
I know it'd lug like hell shifting up into 4th at 31 let alone 5th.
But hey, thats one of the cool things about riding is personal taste.
