87 savage carb problems "Help"!!
09/09/07 at 16:17:06

Got my timing reset on my savage.  So now it starts and runs but it will only run with the choke on.  And when you get on the gas it wants to die.  I dont get it??  Maybe either flooding or not enough gas.  Anyone got any idea's??

Slide could be either stuck or diaphram bad so it is only geting air via the cold enrichment passage, it really isn't a choke like you might think. It is a parallel air/fuel mising device that bypasses the slide so it can run a little faster and richer when cold. Max

It hasn't been sitting long at all I just took the carb apart soak it and cleaned it.  The slide is alittle slow to come down when you push it up.

It's a stealership item I believe. Most everybody in here orders their parts from bike bandit or Ron Ayers.Don't fall over when you see the price.I would check yours first if you soaked carb take the diaphram out CAREFULLY clean it ,dry it ,check for cracks ,whatever.Make sure when you put it back together it goes the right way. There is a tab on the diaphram that goes in a notch on carb body.

I will check that tommorrow and see if it has any cracks in it.  I am probly not going to like the price of one if I have to replace it.  Does it sound like it is getting to much fuel though??

No I don't think it's rich if you have to choke it.I'm with Max what he said above.

Looks like another person who has the same problem I have. It really is a common Savage thing isn't it??

Good luck with getting it fixed!

I might end up rebuilding the entire carb but it will get fixed.  Of cousre there is always the option of ebay to get an entire carb.  Only problem with that is you might get a carb with worse problems.

Maybe check the pilot jet- mine was doing about the same thing and that jet was almost completely closed off with crud. Also, I'd say check the o-ring on the needle jet just in case...
