I've got 8,300 plus miles and although the tread still looks good, I'm thinking I should probably get new tires. Dennis Kirk has some pretty good prices on tires. Wondering if you can put a 140/90H-15 on it and be ok? I have the stock IRC tires on it now.

Reply #1 - 09/06/07 at 15:06:24 Yep, you can put on a 140/90-15 and unless you have a bolt head sticking way out under your fender for some OTHER unrelated issue you won't have a problem with that tire size. I keep trying to peddle a Dunop CruiseMax rear tire (new, never mounted $50 plus shipping) in that same size. Want one? Oldfeller

So Oldie, what part of the country are you in. I just put a new Dunlop on the back but I'm one of those who likes to be prepared. If the shipping does cost as much as you're asking for the tire I might be interested. Or pick it up perhaps. One never knows do one. I've already done a 2,400 round trip to N. Carolina, a 4,000 round trip to Miami AND a 1,200 mile round trip to western N. Dakota to do yet this summer.
The Suzi-Q's just getting warmed up. Pushing it past it's pay scale is what I'm about. That and my bum.

Reply #4 - 09/07/07 at 05:08:27 I went up to the 140/90-15 tire a few weeks ago. With just me on the bike, there's no problem. Shocks set at the second preset. If my wife gets on, the thing starts rubbing the bolt heads like crazy. I have to go full preload to get them to stop. Not exactly what I had anticipated....

Now, how would you carry a unmounted tire back with you on your bike? Hula hoop it around your waist? Tie it to the back rest? Sit on it?

Weeeeeeeellll now, that'd get somewhat tiresome after a bit ..

Me. I'd ride out on a shot rear tire and change it out while you were here and ride back on the new one, personally. That almost makes sense.

Not sure about the S40 since the siderails are a bit different from the Savage but when I put the 140/90-15 on my 98 Savage, it rubbed the bolts on the left side badly. This is with saddlebag supports installed. When I set the shocks to their highest/stiffest preset, it barely avoided rubbing. Changing the mounting bolts to allen mushroom head bolts gave it a little bit more leeway. If I'd removed the saddlebag supports, it would not have rubbed. Now that I have 12.5" shocks installed instead of the stock 10.5" shocks, ther's absolutely no issue.

I've had pretty good tread wear with the IRC's that came on the bike, so I'm starting to lean that way because of cost. Woody

My last rear tire cost $35 and will last over 20,000 miles. Go figure ..... you are most likely going to have to massage the bolts under your fender well eventually anyway, so why not get something significant out of the effort you are going to do anyway?
