Blowing fuses, bike won't run, please help!

So I went to go take my Savage out for a ride and I notice that nothing happened when I tried to crank it. Tried a few easy things and then moved onto the fuses. Sure enough the top fuse was blown. I replaced the fuse turned the key to on and about 3 seconds late the fuse melted. I started troubleshooting and each time I did something I insert a new fuse. Well, 7 20A fuses later, and i'm stumped. What is the top fuse on a 1986 Savage used for? How can I track this down? I didn't change anything since the last time I rode it, so I don't even know where to start!

Someone had a short at where the wires go into the headlight bucket. there's a wiring diagram in the Tech section, look in the index posting.

Reply #3 - 08/28/07 at 20:36:21 The circuits are a bit innertwined, but likely are going to need to chase them, however when I had one doing that - twas the turn single flasher with a dead short - your turn signal on?

That was me!!!!
Actually the short was were the headlight wires got pinched between the frame and swivel part of the forks

Reply #12 - 08/29/07 at 09:17:16 But since the light would be running in series with the short that is pulling more than 20amps wouldn't that cause 20amps to run through the tiny filament of the bulb and effectively destroy it?
