The PO (a person that drives only, not mechanically inclined) was driving down the interstate in Erie, PA in the evening (11PM'ish) in the fall and it just lost power. Like out of gas. He "said" he switched to reserve and it came back for couple of seconds & then same. It did not sieze.
In the rebuild we found: ok Cam chain (replaced anyway), ok oil pump. Engine was apart when I picked up but in nooks & crannies the oil was fairly dark.
The damage was to the back /rear of the cylinder (intake side) My machinst buddy said after he cleaned the aluminum that had melted to cylinder wall but before he removed the grooves in the wall, the bore measured just
under the factory stock spec. Piston was unmeasureable so we don't know if the factory had picked a small piston too (some manufacturer's match cylinder to piston).
Our assumption is that with a stock 2001 "Lean" bike , a tight piston and oil that was getting too old, the piston "Grew" from the heat. But, machinist said the engine should have been knocking
pretty loud. I wonder how "non-mechanically inclined" a person has to be to not here the noise........
