On the Road Again...

Finally got her back together about an hour ago. Turned the key, hit the starter and she fired right up...

How sweet it is...

'Bout to take her out for a shakedown cruise. \m/ Grin \m/

Thing ran fine -no it ran GREAT- until the main kicked in- I should have known... It was a bit rich before. Without the stock airbox, it's super rich. And wouldn't you know it? The only people that work barber's hours any more are the motorcycle shops. Can't get a smaller main until Tuesday...  Angry

...why not buy a bunch of cheap #4 plastic or brass washers, and use them to construct your own custom spacer to lean out your main jet?...

I think I'll give that a whirl... tomorrow.  Grin I had to push the d@mn thing up a hill for about a mile when it decided it wasn't going to start and my head still hurts. It's only 102 degrees in the shade...

Nothing like a black flag right off the starting line!

(Speaking of black flags, I just watched Grand Prix- awesome movie)

Surprise surprise, I found a shop open on a Monday! But they didn't have both the jets I was looking for...

I'll give the 152.5 a try and see if that helps enough. I wanted a 150...

Anyway, I do have a question- what would a hotter spark plug do in conjuctions a leaner jet?

Changed the spark plug as well... Went with the Champion. Fired right up. But, my license is only provisional. And it's after sunset.  Angry

Give her a road test tomorrow.

Leaning a carb mix and changing to a hotter plug at the same time can be a formula for disaster. More specifically, holing a piston.

What makes you think you need a hotter plug? The only time I'd ever resort to one is with an engine already in need of overhaul, and just trying to squeeze a few more miles out of an oil burner. Otherwise, I consider hot plugs to be a hazard best avoided, and well realistically, best avoided altogether.

Oh, Hey... That really is a wicked look you've got going with the bike! And kept the front fender too... good for you! The bits of red and yellow are a unique touch.

I was just curious. Something I hadn't really thought about before, but after reading your explaination, I had one of those forehead-slapping moments...

Thanks! Yeah, when I took the fender off to paint it, I saw all the crud up under there and decided I didn't want that all over me.

New header wrap sure does stink at first. It's an odor I haven't had the (dis)pleasure of smelling for a long time...

Other than that, the bike runs great! First time out of the subdivision with it... awesome. This thing is a pure joy.

(Having said that, it probably won't start now  Tongue)

All right- big bug: Rode it this morning and it ran fine. It ran great. Other than dying once when I rolled off the throttle, no issues.

I got home and my right hand was just about asleep- the drag bars have no angle at all so I took them off to bend them appropriately. For the time being, I put the stock bars back on. After ten minutes of work. I fired her up to take a spin around the block and it started backfiring through the carb and it sounded like it was preigniting in the combustion chamber.

I am completely over my head with this one. Any suggestions?

(My gut is telling me an M-80 dropped right in the bowl and a new ride will solve my problem.)
