600 mile maintenance, how about 700?
07/16/07 at 10:51:34

By nature I am an impatient person.  I have about 634 miles on the Savage/S40 and won't be able to do the maintenance until Friday or Saturday.

Am I asking for trouble if I keep riding this week?

If I do then that means that I would be doing my 1st service between 700 and 750 miles.

So if I keep riding, will I regret it down the road or will I be fine if I push up that initial services by 100 or so miles?

Nah, don't worry, there is a good fudgefactor build in the factory service schedule. An extra 100 makes no diff Smiley

Don't worry about it, just ride it and get the first check as soon as you can get it done.  100 or so miles won't hurt it as long as the oil level is good and there is no noticable problems.  I wouldn't let it go much over 700.  My dealer told me that he has had people bring them in as much as 300-400 miles over and there was no problem with them at all, but I had my S40 in at about 700 for the 600 mile check.

600 miles is about 1000 kilometers -- sounds pretty arbitrary to me!  As long as the oil level's good and it's running OK going over a little won't hurt a thing.

The Guzzi was due at 700. I called & asked if I coud ride it in & have it done. Sure, no bigee I was told. Even tho I HAD the 700 on it & its about 300 to Houston to get it done. No prob on the 650 either, another 100 wont be an issue/

Thanks everyone.  I feel much better now about taking it over the limit.

I checked the oil last night and it's within the proper levels.  I actually wanted to change it but I didin't have a 14mm wrench and of course, nothing else would work.  Tried a monkey wrench, needlenose pliers, regular pliers and the alligator grip ones.  All I did was convince myself that if I continued to use those tools I would stip the bolt too much.  As it is I think I did a little damage to it but nothing to worry about.

So today I pick up the proper wrench and will at least change the oil after work and if the weather hold up I can feel more secure tomorrow during "Ride your bike to work day" which is turning out to be every day for me  Cheesy

Thanks again everyone.

Hah! I have 28,000 miles on my 02 and still hasnt seen that first required 500 miles tuneup. Did check the valves after 15,000 miles tho. Still didnt need any adjustment. Id just change the oil, maybe the plug, tighten all the nuts on the bike up, check tire pressure, adjust the clutch cable and you've accomplished all that the dealer is gonna do for about $150.

Local dealership told me $190.  I did just change the oil last night.  My very first oil change of any kind.

2 quarts and a new filter.  I was suprised that the new oil filter didn't come with an extra o-ring.  I'll have to make a note to grab a fresh one for the next oil change.  Other than that though it was pretty easy and I raised the seat while I was at it too.

At some point over the weekend I"m going to try and check everything else out but at least now, after hearing everyone else's experience, I'm not worried that anything will be out of whack.

There are 2 orings. The one that fits in the groove in the oil filter cover can be used till it is just old & tired. I am on my 3rd or 4th oil change with it. I lost the other one, no idea it was there. Finally found an O ring & stuck it up there. I need to get an "Official" Oring to put there & get a spare to have around. It  is good to have a spare for each place so the thing can always be put back on the road after the oil is drained.
