I've been watching my oil leak pretty closely for the last 10,000 miles or so, but yesterday I felt hot oil splashing onto my leg and knew that my time had run out.  Its obviously coming from the area of the plug and dripping down the fins onto the crankcase cover.  The bike is a 2001 w/ over 25k miles so I know I shouldn't complain.  My question is, until I get around to the dreaded teardown, would a heavier weight oil slow down the leak enough for me to continue riding? It calls for 10W-40 but I'm thinking about 15 or 20W -40. Its a Florida bike so cold temps are not a problem. Any thoughts on the heavier oil?

My thought would be the heavier oil is going to be just as slick if it gets somewhere it shouldn't (like on a tire   ), and just as unsightly. I never had the oil plug leak, but it didn't sound all that bad to repair.

I noticed the more I idled and the less I ran down the road the more it leaked. When I looked up at the one in my B-i-L's 87 I could see it moving up and down at idle but it tended to stay down more at road speed. At idle on his it was almost acting like a pump. Didn't look much at mine, but it does collect in the RH side of the head and then run over to and leak off the LH back corner of the engine fins when parked. Max
