Cylinder oil leak - not the plug!
06/23/07 at 08:18:56
I just noticed a film of oil spreading over the front cylinder fins and along the left side. Oh no, I thought - the dreaded plug (cap) leak!! It was annoying to my pride as mechanic too, since I had replaced the cap just over 1K miles ago at the first break-in service to torque the head bolts. Well, close inspection showed the plug was bone dry and the oil appeared to originate at the front 8mm cylinder head stud. Sure enough, it was quite loose, a few foot pounds at most, so I torqued it up to around 19 ft.lbs. then cleaned the oil film off. Time will tell if this is the fix. Meanwhile, this stud is far away from most internal oil sources so I suppose it has seeped around from somewhere. Lets hope the head hasn’t warped (compression / running is fine). Any one else have oil in this area that wasn’t the typical plug leak?
