Battery Bad?
06/21/07 at 12:32:59

I've been encountering problems starting the bike in the early mornings and after rainfalls, whether the bike was covered or not.  It's putting out 12.4v but testing the cold cranking amps at 150 tester says the battery is bad.  What does the savage 650ls need to turn it over?

the rainfall stuff doesn't make since to me - unless that just means the engine is cold - or is the bike stored outside?

12.4v is a bit low - and if the load test pulls it down much more the ign module won't spark properly -

how old is the battery? time for a agm battery like the big crank maybe - then you don't have to worry it about the thing.

Not much, but make sure the decompression solenoid is working correctly.

There is an old truckers trick to check a battery - fire up your bike and point the headlamp at a blank wall - get a mental picture of how bright the center of the headlight is with the engine idling . Now rev the engine up.

If the light brightens up significantly as the engine rpms increase - the battery is getting weak and approaching the end of its service life.

It is not scientific nor is it exact but it does give a simple read on battery condition!

And with that knowledge you can make a decision on continuing or replacing the battery
