Oil cunsuption on New S40
06/15/07 at 15:08:19
First of all I hate calling it THAT. Its an LS650 Savage in my book. It's totally different from any other bulavard ( can't even spell it) or what ever. Ok My Question is about Oil consumption on a new 07 with 2167 miles Bought new. Had first service done and i watched so I know they adjusted the valves. (and that was after it set overnight. I did about 1500 ( after first service) miles and my oil level was right between the high and low marks in the site glass. I was surprised that there was only about 4-5 oz. differents between mid site glass and full. But Hey I'm a newbie to this bike ok. Is my oil consumption normal?...... I have avery good dealer. He at least warns me that he IS going to screw me
In All Fairness Its one of the few dealers that are reasonable.

How do you KNOW your bike is consuming oil?
Sounds like it might have been filled that way, or it was on a slightly different incline when checked...

Okay, at the risk of starting a firestorm here...
Another thought...
What kind of oil are you using? With no oil consumption at all, it's not uncommon for some oils to loose 5% or more just from volatility losses, that translates to about 3 or 4 onces in a Savage.

Think of it as "evaporation" of the oil, or additional "refining." I happens when the oil gets hot. Normal operating temp is often hot enough. Oil molecules get broken down into very small particles and they can just "evaporate" out of the crankcase thru various means.

Dealer put 10w 40 in it at first service. I bought a Gal. of Delo 400 15w-40 just to top it off. I plan to change the next with the same myself. I have 3 filters. Good choice on oil or not?

Mine burned a little oil until it got to 2500 miles.
It has not burned any oil now for the last 4500 miles.
YMMV!

My 06 S40 used a little oil after the first service, but after around 2000 miles, it didn't use any at all. After the first sevice, it dropped from the full mark to about mid glass also, but never dropped any lower than that. After 2000 miles, I forget just what the miles were, I was involved in an escort by the Highway Patrol that was around 70 miles, and we stayed around 80 MPH, and it used no oil at all. I have around 5600 miles on it after 11 months.
Maybe it has something to do with the break in, I don't know. ???

Yes, and that's the other possibility...Break-in. I bought my Savage used with 600 miles on it, and it never did use any oil, but that can also cause oil consumption.

I bought mt '06 with 76 miles on it. Put full synthetic 10-40 bike oil at 500 miles. Changed again at 2500 miles and put in Rotella 15-40. Have used Rotella a lot over the years and it is a very good oil. I just checked oil yesterday and was right at the low level after 1500 miles. It has been abnormally hot so far this summer (lower to mid 90's). I have been hearing more valve noise than normal esp after coming off the interstate. I believe I am going to have to go to a 20-50 with my 40 mile round trip commute mostly by freeway at 70-75 mph. I topped off with Castrol 20-50 (I know you shouldn't mix viscosities but no qts of 15-40 to be found) until I can get a filter and do a full change. I know an air-cooled motor burns more than a water cooled but I believe adding a little between oil changes is well within the norm. We will see what happens with a full 20-50 change and even more heat coming!!

You CAN mix 15 weight with 20 weight oil despite what many oil companies say, but never mix more than 1 up or 1 down. You can mix 0 with 5, or 5 with 10, etc.
My 1997 with 3500 miles ran Rotella for break-in and used a little, but now with 10-40 Amsoil full synthetic that completely stopped. Experienced the same thing in my two air-cooled dirt bikes. With the slow oil flow to the head, I'd recommend against conventional 20-50. I believe that will compound the head oiling problems, especially at startup.

I havent had a full run on the Rotella 15-40 yet,The Suzuki oil I was running would hold till I had about 1500 on the oil. Then, it would start needing topped off pretty regularly. All the way to 3,000 miles, I would have to watch the oil. I want to see if it acts thge same with Rotalla.
I was topping it off last nite when I realized the oil I was usiong was contaminated with water, so I pulled the plug & drained it. Went to WalMart & grabbed a few quarts O Rotella. Sure was glad I had a filter laying around.

To everyone saying burning oil? Where does it go? I've been noticing my oil case getting dirty on the outside. Could this be a blown seal? I changed my oil and filter after about 2500kms, (yes I'm canadian) Seems I lost about 550ml. 5.5litres this probably isn't normal is it?

The bike only holds 2.5 quarts! How'd you loose 5.5?
