Acts like out of gas after long hill
05/31/07 at 19:42:45

Hello all,
I'm new here with my 1st question. My '96 runs great but after a long up hill pull (we have lots of these in western NC) at 50 -60 mph it acts like I need to switch to reserve just after I back off the throttle. Any ideas?  It has the stock muffler, carb screws show they have been out and the idle screw plug has been drilled out. It almost never pops or back fires, only a small poof when shut off, gas mileage in the mid to upper 40's and a little black soot in the end of the muffler makes me think the first owner did some jetting? With all that - is this a too lean at top end problem that others also have ???? Thanks for any help with this and for all the great info I've been reading here.

only ever does this after a hard hill climb?
by the way does it cut out when you let up on it or it's already cutting out going up the hill?

Runs great up hill, just when I've been 3/4 throttle or more for 1/4 - 1/2 mile and back off it dies just like when you run out of gas. The first few times I thought I was out. Turned to resurve, it cought up and ran fine.

Up to about 60 - 65 it will outpull my buddy on his 883 sportster up the same hill.

Yep.  Up near the Parkway on 25.  Nice country for sure.  I think that I had to do service in an Ingles up there....

We lived in Arden, just south of Asheville.

Yep, you know the area. Great place to enjoy my Savage on tight winding mountain roads. You also know how many hills we ride up and down. It stinks to have to feather off the gas near the top of a long up hill just to keep it from knocking off.

Try the same hill in reserve and see if you have the same problem.

I suspect the vacuum petc0ck.  At full thottle, you'll have minimum vacuum pressure available.  If it's a long hill, you might drain the bowl before you get to the top.   Grin

Yeah, you have a point, but I've ridden the same terrain.  Never noticed it.

Hey, make sure you go to Cherokee for that biker thing this year.  At the moment I forget the name.  That is one bash that I miss....Of course I think that the last time is really what ruined my hearing Tongue

As Verslagen says, try the same ride on PRI and see what happens.  It might not be a definitive answer, but it'll get us in the right direction.

By the way...how's the kudzu?

Does it run oput of gas while you are holding the throttle open or is it dying when you let off the gas?

To eliminate the petc0ck problems put the little handle to PRI.
Check the idle RPM to be 1000-1200 RPM.
Ease the throttle i.s.o closing it abruptly.

Any improvement: let us know

Thanks for all the helpful ideas! It makes a newbe feel welcome.  It runs fine with the throttle held to keep my speed on the hill, it's only when I get to the top and bring the throttle back to half or less that it does it. And NO I'm not going to hold it full open over the top and down the hill    Grin if I did, I might not be able to post the results Lips Sealed
Greg it hasn't rained in more than four weeks- even the Kudzu is brown. I like to look on the bright side, four weeks of high 70's days, high 50's nights, great mountains to ride and no time wasted mowing grass!

I'll try the same hill with the pethingy on res. or pri  and let yall know.
Oh, I was given the Bigzuk handle from my 4 wheel drive club for my Suzuki Samuri rock crawler with 10" lift & 33" tires, I hope no one on this list was using it?

The effect of using PRI or RES is different, though.  One is vacuum operated and one is not.

You're probably safe with that handle since I don't think anyone in here has a thumper quite like that one Tongue

Thanks to all that responded with helpful ideas. Sorry to take so long to get back. I've now got a clear in line fuel filter so I can see the fuel flow. Today I tried the same old hill, it cut out at the top, changed to res. and at the now slower speed it poped and sputered with some fuel & air in the filter. When I changed to PRE the filter filled up and it started running OK. Looks like I need to check the vacumn hose.
Is there anything else I should check?
Thanks for everyone's help!!!!
