Anybody know a good Savage mechanic in the UK?
05/21/07 at 07:43:26

Hi there, newbie alert!  Smiley

I've bought myself a Savage which sadly has turned out to be a bit of a dog so I'm looking for somebody in the UK who's totally up on them; I suspect it's suffered from the notorious seized cam chain, as the valve heads refuse to move at all, but I'm nowhere near mechanically minded enough to try taking the thing apart. If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be really grateful - thanks in advance!

Can I ask what you paid? If it's low enough, you may be able to justify trying even though you feel so unqualified. The cost of having a mechanic do this may be so high you might be willing to risk wrecking the engine<though, I doubt you will, it's stone cold simple in there> rather than have all that $$$ in the bike. Parts & labor add up fast. If you are methodical, & willing to get dirty, I don't see how anyone can fail. If you can load pics & show the folks here what you are looking at, there are folks here who can & will see ya thru. The tools aren't that expensive. A manual & tools & you will be sitting pretty.

What happens when you hit the starter?
Have you removed the valve covers & looked in there while the starter runs?

No.  Sure don't, but for the right amount I could get my passport renewed Grin

What did you do to try to turn the engine?

Hmmm, if it's that simple in there may be worth a go myself (especially with the kinda pool of knowledge that seems to be around these parts!) - I'll get the machine back from where I've been trying to work on it this week, so might start stripping it down and having a look. Anyone recommend a good workshop manual for them?

Oh, and cheers Allen, PM incoming!

hi - englishman living in US here - welcome to site.

not sure if the works suzuki manual is available in the UK, but just checked - Amazon UK carries the very popular Clymers manual - 23 quid free delivery if you stipulate that option @ check out. not sure what model your savage is, but don't buy the older version unless it covers your bike - however the one that goes up to 2004 should serve your bike even if it is a newer version - does fine enough for my '97. it is not as technical as the works one - some say that is an advantage, others would argue...

look at spending a bit on tools to work on your bike but less than you would to pay a mechanic & they are yours to keep & work on bike in future...

Thanks for that George - the bike's an early 90s model, I reckon '91, but it's an import so I'm no 100%. Not so technical is definately a good thing; despite a degree in physics I've still got something of a habit of botching vehicle repairs!

I know there are some bikes that post the year of manufacture on the steering stem - can't check on my savage as it is not @ my place today - may want to have a quick look to see if the/your savage does. not sure if this is relevant but how many gears does your bike have - think the early ones had (only) a 4 speed. others on this site can help on this subject).

good luck getting bike fixed.

Have ya looked under the valve covers at the valves when you try to start it?

What is it doing?

Have you pulled the plug to make sure the cylinder isnt hydraulically locked by gas or oil?
