A little wobble
05/15/07 at 22:15:51

I just bought a 97 savage, its great, I love it. But I seem to have a slight wobble at 55-60 mph when doing a slight turn. Any input out there?

Couple of easy things to check first;

Correct tire pressure? (28psi F, 33 psi R according to MOM)

Is there a balancing weight(s) on the front wheel (they can sometimes come off)?

Condition of front wheel; has the rim taken a knock?

Condition of tires (esp. front); Any flat spots, cupping, etc.?

after you check the easy things and your sure the front tire isn't worn heavy inthe middle - this leaves uneven tread patterns on the sides that you only touch when in a turn - next up might be to check the torque on the axle pinch bolt - I've heard of these being left loose and causing such, then you have the steering stem bearings.

I certainly don't want to keep you from troubleshooting a possible problem - especially when it could be a safety issue.  However, if you determine all is well but still think it's not quite right in the way it feels, I thought the Savage felt slightly mushy/wobbly on certain road surfaces, rain grooves, some turns, etc.  A fork brace has corrected all of that.  Again, this shouldn't preclude you from checking your existing components but it may also be that you are noticing normal fork flex.

  Smiley Thanks for all the info about my wobble problem  Grin I have new tires and the air is right. I will check the axle torque. I am new to this bike and the road was a little rough when I incountered the problem. I will check it on a smoother highway and see what happens. Again, thank you all.  Mike

Mike, check all of the bolts on the triple trees to make sure they're tight. If all the bolts on your front end are tight and your front wheel is true, it is possible to have a defective/bad tire.

Just an afterthought, you may want to check for loose spokes too.
