Haven't seen anyone mention the boot between the the carb and motor. A tear or leak there creates a pretty significant disturbance in the mixture (lean) plus a vacuum leak. You can compensate some by really richening up things, but the MPG will really drop off. There are a few posts where the carb was rolled out of the boot and it tore. Suggest looking for holes there.
