yeah, well.

My header's rusty.  if i don't like the cherry bomb, the guy at the muffler shop can cut it off and weld something else on.

It's only five bux to get one welded.

doc - nothing ventured, nothing gained - I'd kick up a holy stink about the darn thing falling off - there being no clamp on it & your not noticing it until you got home due to the fullface & noisy muffler not being much (heck, say no)different from it not being there, your not calling as they had closed by the time you got home, your backtracking & not seeing it, your only being stopped for a short time so the muffler could not have cooled off allowing removal without thick abestos gloves, etc.

be positive, reasonalbe (no point or results in getting backs up uneccassirly. be definate, be polite but firm - you might be right in saying they won't be eager to replace it but say heck - I didn't mess up & that's why I took it to you guys to get it done professionally so I would not have any problmes.

sounds like a goof - I had a buddy who worked for an oil change franchise & said it was alarming how many times customers came back after the oil drain plug was not done up secure.

good luck, mate!

1.Be sure the SE fell off AFTER YOU LEFT THE SCHOOL !!!!!
100% sure You would notice the diff in the sound when starting the bike .
 2. Go in the shop when there are a LOT OF CUSTOMERS
 3. Try to talk to the manager or to the owner
 4. Do not forget even for a moment, that You paid for the SE and You paid  for the work. Feel like these guys voluntary or not stole Your $$$$

agree with slavy doc - don't call but go in to see them - lot easier to get point acroos & get what you deserve face to face - easier to get blown off on the phone.

if you have to call them because working during weekday just say you have a problem with the muffler & want to talk to the manager or owner in person & leave it @ that - when would a good time to come in? (soon as possible if you can but if not then on Saturday)

good luck - george

Ended up going in person today. The owner and his marketing director were both eating lunch at the counter. I told my story and said i thought a clamp should have been used. He said "yeah we were out of those clamps." He didnt argue that it fell off, only acted like he was sorry he had to deal with the situation. The marketing lady talked to me more than him, he acted as if he didnt know what to do and sat motionless and silent for a long time. Finally the marketing lady said "He takes care of his customers, he'll make it right, we dont want you going around telling your friends you had a bad experience." and looked right at him as if to say YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING. Finally he said he would call around and try to get a pipe and put it on free of charge, but he said this with absolutely NO enthusiasm. So hopefully he'll call, if he doesnt call by next monday im going back in there and getting a bit harsher. I'll keep you guys updated.

P.S. i took the bike out today and its a headslitter without a muffler thats for sure. Anyway i saw a bolt in the middle of the road( i live on a seldom used road) and got off and picked it up. VERY sure its the same one that was holding my SE on, it probably shook loose, fell out and it took that long for the putty crap he put on to let the muff slip off.

Mna, gotta feel for the guy. I mean, businesses, even those we loosely call "stealerships" are always being blead by losses & daily costs. It isn't all profit in their world. Losses of this magnitude have severe impacts. IF it happened this time, Ohh & it did, how many other ridiculous, "Shoulda never happened" losses have the suffered? Whatever the case, No one wants this kinda thing in their day.
You got very lucky Doc, & I am relieved that you got the resolution you did instead of the guy insisting it was stolen,, Phhhht, not a likely story, but he coulda.. I think it's a crummy deal all the way around. A  hassle for the customer & a loss for the dealer. I hope he learns that a bucks worth of clamp oughta ALWAYS be in the shop. No excuse for a shop to be outta clamps, ever. Surely they can see how few they have & order when the # is low, & hell,, if I needed one for an installation I would go BUY one, retail, right then, Wadda silly mistake,,

Exactly. I kinda felt sorry for him myself, but it needs to be set right. He should have just asked me to go buy a clamp and bring it to him, id have done it, no questions asked.

Very surprised he didnt play the stolen card, i do respect him for admitting it was his fault that meant alot. Still it should be something they contact me about soon. Im giving him till next monday, that should be long enough to at least have some info for me.

I also take my share of the blame. From researching mostly on this site i KNEW that a clamp should have been used, and could have put one on myself. Instead i just played it off like "he knew what he was doing" and didnt take action. But im a mechanical idiot so i shouldnt have to deal with diagnosing crappy workmanship.

I honestly cant ride the thing like it is, it HURTS, and people on the road prolly want to kill me...lol...and i dont blame em. So its a royal pain all the way around, my bike is unrideable and he's gotta lose time that he could have been making money to fix a shotty job...we are all losers on this one!

don't feel bad for the dealer, Doc, even understanding what Justin said - he did screw up & needs to make it good - imagine if it had fallen loose & caused you to have a spill, injuring yourself & the bike.

not wishing to sound hardnosed but such a situation could have happended maybe.

glad it is going to be made good - follow up like you said & ensure you get satisfaction.

Good point it would not have been good to hit that puppy goin around a curve when it fell off....not good at all. I guess i should be happy that nothing like that happened. Im giving him every chance to make it right, no rash judgements ect. I will definately give him opportunity to make it right.

Doc I would wager that muffler isn't very far from where you found that bolt!!! I'm sure that thing just blew off after the bolt was gone. Harley Davidson has a really nice clamp for the 883 and it should fit. A dealer should have plenty tossed about there shop, see if they will give you one.

I hope I wasn't unclear, but justin case, I think the man needs to get a muffler on that bike very quickly, free O charge & am appology for the inconvenience caused. Doc, you may have had a twitch in your gut about a clamp, but seriously, you hired a PROfessional MEkanikk to install that muffler. If he  didn't have sense enough to do it right, the consequences belong to him. That said, if someone is riding over their head & crash & mess up the bike & get kinda skinned up, I feel sorry for them, But they did have it coming. So, I feel sorry for the folks at the shop, but they earned the pain & now they have a chance to learn. If you HAD put a clamp on it, then you would have protected them from their own foolishness. Who knows what shoddy work they might have allowed to go down the road next? They might have short cutted something that got someone hurt. You may have allowed them to learn a lesson that will benefit them & their clients in the future.

Will you go back & let them work on your bike?  Assuming they follow thru & make good & all that. Ohh, I wouldnt be shy to moan about not being able to ride for the last( however many days) Maybe hit him up for a discount on enough oil & a filter to get an oil change. Whatever you really need. They owe you more than just stickin a muffler on.

I don't know - bunch of dealers of various sorts I've been around would have just told him to take a fly f'k at a rolling donut - like the Victory dealer up the road - had they not been such a pric'k when I needed parts for the '95 (they are also a suzuki dealer) there'd be a Victroy 8-Ball in the garage - but there's a MotoGuzzi instead - and I'll never spend a penny there.

these guys - great looking web site but the absolute worest piles of sh!t I ever tried to work with.

fly f'k at a rolling donut
aviating interc@u>se at a rotating pastry?

I know& I am proud of the guy for not totally shaftin Doc, but, if it were me,, I would whine about the inconvenience it caused me & the time I missed riding. If it didnt pay off,,owell,, I would in no way fail to acknowledge the ethical treatment or indicate I would tell anyone to NOT go there. I would make sure the guy knew I appreciate the "straight up" admitting & accepting responsibility & making good, but a partial payment is just that. I DO have some feelings for the guy, but HIS choices impacted Doc's life. More than just the muffler. Just my opinion. I wouldnt pitch a fit, I would just hint a bit & see if the guy has a guilty conscience & would allow me a discount on somethin.thats all.
