Bad day for my savage...

Well i got my screamin eagle muff put on two days ago by a local bikeshop...i had them rejet while i was at it, and told them i didnt want it to backfire. So i pick it up saturday and start it up, it idles fine, but after i get started home i pull in the clutch at about 45mph and the thing dies. It dies 4 times before i can get it home. So i get home and adjust the idle screw, and get it to be managable(i still have to gas it a little when i pull in the clutch.) So i say fine, i can live with this.
Today i go to school and park my bike, im in there for an hour and come back out. I notice my bike is louder on the way home, and its backfiring alot more. So i stop at a light and look at my muffler....NO MUFFLER! The thing fell off i guess. I seriously doubt someone stole my sizzling hot muffler while i was in class, but i guess its possible. My question is should i call the guy and have him put another one on for free? Im confused here, it seemed fine when i started it at school but started sounding different on the way home, makes me think it fell off about halfway home. Sorry bout the long post some opinions on what to do would be helpful...im rather upset.

If it fell off, heck yeah, have the shop replace it and put it on for free. It was their responsibility to make sure that it was secure.

If they put it on, it's their responsibility. Besides, I'd say you woulda noticed it immediately when ya started it at school if it had been stolen. It fell off on the way home, OR someone grabbed it at a stoplight. I cant imagine being the mechanic who forgot to tighten the clamps & didnt even use the bolts on the rear support. I wish you had called them as soon as you got home. They gonna ask you why you didnt. I hope you wear earplugs when you ride. it will be a lot easier to explain how the noise changed so dramatically 7 you missed it.

I would like to think that I would notice my muffler falling off while I was riding.

Yeah, i definately think id have noticed, also there is a pretty big hill coming out of the drive at school that i get going about 60mph on and as i shifted i dont recall there being any backfire, however i started noticing it about halfway home, louder, and more backfire.
Oh, justin the place closes at 6 and this happened at like 530 so i could just tell them they were closed when it happened and call first thing tomorrow. I feel kinda bad for making him replace it for some reason, but he definately needs to it was his fault. Must have shook loose over the course of the two days...Im thinking maybe i need to fib a little and tell him i saw it or heard it fall off, because he may pull the "it was stolen" card. I seriously believe there is about a 5% chance it was stolen, im almost sure it fell off.

Well honestly the difference between no muff and a screamin eagle is not outrageously noticable, especially at idle. yes i noticed it almost immediately but wasnt sure what was going on.wearing a full face helmet and with a pipe that loud it would be pretty probable one wouldnt notice the "clang" of it hitting the road.

might be worth a backtrack to see if you can find it, then he's got nothin' to say.

Both seem pretty odd assume'n the bike shop is any good at all - sure would look strange for someone to sit there and take it off in the parking lot. Maybe you could follow your path tomorrow and find a beat up SE on the side of the road. Sure don't want to blame the shop if they didn't screw up.... but seems the most likely.

I backtracked but i just drove the route so itd be hard to see the ditches and such. Honestly i dont see anyone stealing it its a little rural community college and the thing had to be boiling hot the whole time i was in class. It would take work gloves and tools to get the thing off.
I really dont know how i can make the shop do anything anyway, they will most likely refuse to buy a new pipe and probably will not do the labor for free anyway. I think i can get the next one on, he moved the bracket and it shouldnt be a problem to line it up. But honestly i dont have the funds to buy any kind of exhaust right now...im broke. Also i gave him my stock exhaust, but even if i had it the bracket has been moved so it wouldnt fit without modifying it back the way it was... Just a bad situation all the way around.

was it backfiring on your way to school? i would make them buy and put on a new one. if the muffler was secured to the braket and there was a muffler clamp on the muffler there was no way it just fell off. the mechanic did not do something right just my 2 cents

Oh UPDATE! lol, there was NO CLAMP ON THE MUFFLER. I dont know why i just thought of that but he had some kind of putty that smoked like crazy for about a day, that was all that was holding it on the header. I should have thought something was up, i guess part of me just thought he had welded it on or something..i dont know. But no clamp thats for sure. one bolt holding it on the bracket and some putty stuff holding it on the header. I take it the putty was some kind of exhaust sealent. -DOC

Phew, sure am glad you beat me to buying that SE, Doc. I ended up getting a cherry bomb on eBay and having it welded onto the header.
Oddly, it hasn't fallen off yet.

tux you should have welded it to spacer and not ruin the header. what if you dont like the cherry bomb anymore or it burns out (like bombs always do) you have to buy another header and not cheap you could of went to any muffler shop for a $1 got a spacerof any length.
