larger gas tank on savage

Anyone ever replace their little tank for a bigger one? How did that work. When I got my bike 3 years ago, I was told there is a tank that fits it well but don't remember what it is. My tank is in need of repair and I am hoping to use this as an excuse to enlarge it instead.

Just click the link in the post above and see the pix, etc. of my conversion to a five gallon Harley softtail tank. Not really a hard chore. Hardest part will be getting an affordable tank. I love it. It does make the front of the seat a good deal higher thus shifting the weight on your bottom back somewhat which I consider a good thing. I'm not using a stock seat so your usage might vary. The knees are spread a bit farther which I like. More relaxed sitting stance and all that. And you get a lot more options for fuel stops when you "don't have to stop" every two hours.

I just bought this tank tonight.  I intend to polish the steel tank and cover with a clearcoat.  I will also be putting on this old style "Army Air Corps insignia" used on WW2 airplanes

The outdented area that looks sort of like a wing will have the insignia on it.
I could not figure out how to get the insignia onto the picture.

It is a new tank from an ebay store, and is meant for some HD model.  Let me get the address for you ...

I printed out a rough pic of the tank and then glued a printed pic of the decal on that pic so the whole thing is not very clear but you get the basic idea I am going for...

It's 3 gallons...

I'd switch for a 4.5 or 5 gal...

I agree, it looks really nice but I don't know if I'd go through all that work and not get a significantly larger capacity.

I think 3 gallons would be enough for me. I get about 60-65 on my bike and 180 miles would be enough. When we rode to Texas a few years ago, I barely made it to one gas station so I just want a little bit more capacity. I don't know if I would want the size of the 5 gallon but that bike sure looks nice.  I think I am sticking to my tank for right now but will be watching this if I ever change this. My tank has been repaired and hubby is painting the bike this week. I cannot wait to get it back

well if you are getting 65 mpg, then the 3 gallon tank would give you about 13 to 15 more miles per tank. not worth all the extra work in my opinion. Now, if you are doing it for purely cosmetic purposes, then thats a different story.

We currently have a 2.9 gal tank including the reserve.

Most of us gets a little better than 50 mpg for a range of a 100 miles.  150 if your bike likes sucking air.  (tank dents anybody?)

Anywhere between 4 and 5 gals would make me happy.

Just getting rid of the speedo hole will bring it up to 5 gal.  The gz250 is a possible tank.  I'm looking in the gs series.  There's couple with similar mounts.  If I find one at the right price...

All I need to find is a mc boneyard in LA and the time.

Happy hunting    Grin
