Hold it, won't work! it has a 84 bolt circle.  we're looking for a 100mm.  Darn, well didn't want the narrow rims anyway.

Well, I guess if somebody were doing a chain conversion anyway, an 84mm bolt circle would be no big deal...

This is still all guess work cause I don't have a bone yard to pick through.

But I've narrowed it down to a '81 to '86 GS550L.

There are both disk and drum versions and sometimes I don't think people know what they really have.

Several sources have said its a 16" rim not sure how wide.  Probably 2.5"  But the recommended tire is 130/80-16.

I did check JT sprockets and it has the 100mm bolt circle.

Already scored caliper and master cylinder for a buck + shipping.  Finding a rim and disk for a buck is going to be harder. Grin

I think this swap would be an expensive cure for a non existant problem.
On pavement in a straight line you should get about 80 percent of your stopping power from the front wheel. In which the dimunitive rear drum is good enough for the job. When braking in the special circumstances tha require more percentage of rear wheel brake, the very nature of the situation is such that you should be braking more gently anyway and using downshift as well.
I would leave it as is .

If you do not want to crash into things you drive/ride within your performance limits.  If you want to drive/ride faster you have the choice of extending your performance limits or exceeding them.  The former allows you to go faster while remaining safe; the latter will lead to a collision.  I recommend the former.

If stopping was the only issue, I wouldn't bother.

I am bothered by the squeeling.  I can deal with cleaning the front.  But the back is inaccessable.

Plus, I like the sport bike look.  The option for tubeless tires.   Grin

Huh, I'm going the other route, with a drum front...

Check out all the older UJMs. Many had 16 inch rear wheels with discs. Some of them have dual disc 19 inch fronts with the same size steering stems. If you are adding a disc rear, ought as well go the whole route with new forks and duals up front.

The bike would be fine with drums on both ends. It doesn't weigh anything. Discs? Overkill.

Yeah, you're right. I can lock up the rears no problem.  Fronts, I don't try to.

As I said, "if stopping was the only issue, I wouldn't bother"

My next set of tires for Thumper wil be mounted on the not quite stock spoke wheels tublessly.  I have my original rear wheel ready to take to Wheelworks, am in the market to borrow a front wheel.

The rear rarely squeals anymore since I eliminated about 1/2 the surface area of the braking surface. It's also requiring a pretty serious application of toe to lock it up now. I can stop this thing a LOT quicker than I could before I did the rear brake mod. Maybe some of it is practice, I KNOW someof it is confidence, since I am not afarid I will lock the rear as soon as I touch it. If anyone is interested, I will explain the mod.
