Rear wheel/brake swap
04/15/07 at 08:35:54

Does anyone know if you can swap an LS650 rear wheel assembly for something out there with a single disk rear brake?  Either 15 or 16" wheel would be fine.

Thoughts?

I am working on a sporty mag wheel.  The axle sizes are different which may require a sporty swing arm or finding a bearing set that will fit the sporty wheel and the Savage axle.  I will be visiting the HD house this week to see what is available.

Is the sporty wheel 16"?  I'd be interested!

The chain mod people used the sproket off of a GS550.

I just checked the fiche for a 1980 GS550 with a cast wheel.  And it has a disk brake!

You might have a donnor if you can stand cast wheels.

Now ALL you have to figure out is the hydraulics to operate the brake Tongue

Guess what? the GS550 also has a hydraulic rear brake pedal, not much to figure out.

But its a 16" rim, will that fit?

Yes.  Depending on the configuration of your bike and the size tire you go with.

130/80/16 should be a perfect fit with no mods.  The only rub is, how wide is the GS550 rim?

I actually prefer cast wheels/tubeless tires. Grin

No kidding?  With a hydraulic rear disk, it also had a hydraulic brake pedal too?  Silly me.  What was I thinking? Grin

So like I said, ALL that you have to do is figure out how to mount the pedal, master cylinder/reservoir, brake light switch, fit the brake lines, and then figure out how to mount the brake caliper to use with the rear disk.  Maybe the swingarm will swap.  Should be easy.

Guess I wasn't be imaginative enough Tongue

Did some shopping today.
Rears:
GS550 rim, 16X2.5
recommended tire, dunlop 25.25 OD (going by memory)
ls650 rim 15X2.5
recommended tire, dunlop 24.75 OD (going by memory)

almost the same.

biker2biker has a few gs550's, total cost should be less than $100.

Fronts are the same.

Yes, the sporty has a 16" on the back, and the tire is 130/80-16.
But after seeing what you found from the GS I think that is the better route.  I wish I had seen that before getting into the sporty side of it.

I found a set of wheels for gs450.
FRONT; J 19 X MT 1.85 |  REAR; J 16 X 2.15

our stock wheels are:
Front Rim: 2.15x19  |  Rear Rim: 2.75x15

If you don't mind the narrow rims...  price is not bad.

Will GS450 wheels fit?  Are the spindles, bearings, and axles the same size?  Or will they just "bolt up" after removing the stock wheels?
