I could really start to smell gasoline after 40 minute ride. Back at the house i noticed gas dripping ocasionally from rear leaft hand edge of tank. Emptied it, removed it. Took off the petthingy to remove tank. After replacing the petthingy, put in some gas, couldn't find any leak...at least none so far. the bad nesws was i droppedd the rubber washer from the speedo cable in under the generator/alternator. Hmm, not ready for prime time yet. maybe s jet blast of water will get it out for me.

I did not lose mine - first time I took tank off it did not even come out. second time I took off tank I fished it out of speedo cable & swapped it for a gromet of suitable size from local hardware store (True Value in my case), nipped up the nurled part of speed cable gently with pliers & have had no leak. maybe this will work for you?

ah yes the magic of that slot - anything you drop within 5feet is likely to end up in there - having fished many a thing out - step 1 is now to put a shop towel over the dang starter. - it pulls pretty easy - but still....

Put oil on o-ring, and gently wiggle starter back in place. (optionally remove dead bugs and dirt from under starter before reinstall) Replace 2 bolts for starter. Replace seal in speedo cable. Slide a bookmark size slip of paper down the space and wiggle it from the from the pulley side to the speedo side and you will scoot that o-ring to a place where you can grab it with a forcep /roach clip.

You've left out a few steps at the end:

Notice leak at bottom of speedo cable.

Replace junk OEM seal with proper sized rubber o-ring.

Ride happily ever after!

I've lost mine a couple O times. I take an O-ring, last one was over an inch in diameter, & cut , at an angle, with dikes. Then I cut it down & use the same angle so the other end overlaps. Havent had a leak yet. It takes a few minutes, but the trick is to make it a few thousandths long, this sticks it in there when the ends press together & the ends pressing togerther seals the slice. With it being at an angle, not sure why I cut it at an angle, just felt right & I did it. All we need to make this work is an Oring long enough to do the job & a cross sectional area that is close to stock, & it doesnt have to be very close to make a new seal work just fine.
Oh, BTW, it does require a small screwdriver & maybe a scratch awl to make one go in & ovrlap right. Needlsnose are nice, too.
