Did you drop your oil pump in a BBQ grill?

Smiley

Damm, that looks like fun.  Great job!

Are you gonna knock the crank apart and check rod bearings too?

Should I inspect those "rod bearings"?  Part of me says...do it all....another part of me says...I've done too much already.....Exhaustion is kicking in....Are those bearings prone to fail?

I have no idea about how those bearings usually hold up. I also have no idea how much crappola has been thru them. Considering the stuff in that oil pump, I would likely want to blow out the oil passages & check everything inside the case. Sure would stink to do half of what was necessary to make it last. But, I am a bit of a worrier..

Listen to the part of you that is saying "do it all." Doesn't matter if OTHER engine's bearings are prone to fail, yours has had that trash in the oil pump come from somewhere. And if the bigger bits ended up there, you can bet that smaller bits circulated in the oil.

How sick would you be if you got it all back together, then in a couple of thousand (or hundred) miles the rod starts knocking on the big end? Happened to me on an old babbitt rod Chevy pickup as a kid. I learned my lesson. Any time you have something difficult torn down, do it all, or regret it later.

Personally, I'd get recommedations from other riders/wrenchers for a local independant shop with the tools and knowledge to do crank/rod work. Then pull the whole crank/rod assembly and take it to them. I'm lucky in that between me, my brother, and several B-I-L... Anything we can't do ourselves, we know people/shops who can do the rest.

Still one question: is the sh%%t in the oilpump metal?.

The big-end bearing can be checked without taking the crankshaft apart. Give it a good cleaning and check the play as per the SSM. If the bearing is f%%ed you will be able to feel and hear it.
As for the other bearing: clean, check and replace as reuired.
Keep us (me) informed, I will split cases in the near future.

The sprinkles are metal and some plastic chunks from the cam chain guides.  I'll check play with all the bearings....Ones I've checked so far are smooth and tight so no harm found yet.

Don't have my manual handy, but I think there is a feeler gage check for the play at the rod that will indicate if the big end bearings need closer inspection.

This is as close as I can get Tongue
