S40 Road Worthy

8) I just got home from a 350 mile trip with the PGR, and I have a few comments concerning the bike on the highway.  First, we have a Highway Patrol escort for arouns 70 miles of the trip, and we stayed between 75 and 80 MPH.  The HD riders were quite impressed with this, especially with the acceleration I had at 70 MPH.  The bike was happy when it was over, but it did quite well.  For those of you who are new to the Savage/S40, keep in mind the very little weight you have at those speeds.  We were in 15-20 MPH wind gust, and it wanted to drift A LOT, and it's cornering was effected A LOT also.  One more thing, my S40 is completely stock.
I don't like to ride it like this, but if I wanted to keep up, I had to.  This is very unusual for us, but the Highway Patrol called the speed.
I just thought those of you who had any doubts about what these little bikes were like on the open road, would like to hear both Pros and Cons.
Ride Safe and sensible. Smiley

I've found that a Fork Brace or something simular makes a BIG difference at those speeds. They are a pricey but one of the best additions to the bike for handling in the twisties or on the superslab.

The brace, open up the exhaust(w/jets spacer and all that) some better tires (me880's here), windscreen and it's a pretty good road bike- bit lite still

oh and the shocks helped a lot - but mine may have been worn out - it would pogo stick in the corners

I am seriously thinking about a Super Brace, and that will be about it.  I am trying to keep it as stock as possible because in about a year I will be getting something a little bigger, like the S50 or S83.  I love this little bike, but I find myself doing more and more highway riding, and I would like a little more weight and power.
thanks guys for your suggestions Smiley 8)

Get a Super Brace or a Tkat brace (pic), the difference is really worth it.
It just clamps on.
Straighter line at highway speed, less wobble on cracks and tar snakes.

http://www.tkat.com

or inquire at:
tkat@tkat.com

He made up a bunch for the LS650 last year, he might still have some. If not, the super brace will work, for a few more bucks.
