Neutral between 4th & 5th?????
03/26/07 at 10:12:18
So my Savage has 2 Neutrals.
When shifting from 4th to 5th under acceleration, I find myself in neutral. I have to pull the clutch in again and pull up on the shift peg a 2nd time to engage 5th. This doesn't happen everytime, but prolly about 50% of the time.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Robert
BTW: it is a 1996 LS650 with 8100 mile on the clock.

I've go the same problem w/ my 97...
when shifting between 4th and 5th, if you have this problem, you need to:
1) pull in the clutch
2) upshift normally while still holding the clutch in
3) Keep pushing the shifter up (not too hrad, just normal)
4) realease clutch
this hould prevent false neutrals...

Something could be wrong I guess - but after my left foot was trained it no longer happens - it was a slow learner likely took almost daily commute ride and 4 or 5 months.

Does anyone think adjusting the clutch will help? Like tightening up the cable so when you pull the clutch in, it will "pull in" more and not get stuck in between gears....???

I'm not sure what this problem would be but adjusting the clutch cable couldn't hurt as long as it's adjusted properly. You don't want it too tight or the clutch won't engage fully and you'll get apparent clutch slippage.

I too have the same problem.
I don't think it's anything to do with the clutch.
I generally use a clutchless shift from 3rd up.
We discussed this before and the only guess was maybe the shifter was bent. But since not affecting anything else, not a problem. Learn to deal with it.

I have a '97. Never had that happen and rarely use the clutch for 4-5 shifts...

I have an 05 & from the beginning it felt like the shifter stopped in its travel quicker inb the 4th to 5th shift than any others. It never popped out & as soon as I put power to it I could pull the clutch & try to set the shifter again & it would be fully engaged & would not advance. I could, however, hold the clutch in & let pressure off the shifter & pull up again & it would go on in. So, try letting off the shifter a bit & then give it a fair heave up again & see if it popps on into fifth. After you do this a few times maybe it will start allowing it to engage easier. You might try just making the initial shift attempt a bit more vigorous..

My 06 was a little stiff going into 5th, but after using my suicide(no clutch) for the last 300 miles, there is no more missed fifth.

My '95 misses the shift into 5th as well. I notice that I have to be very deliberate to shift all the way into 5th otherwise it sticks in neutral or pops out of 5th. I've just learned to kick it twice with my foot to make sure it's in gear.

Usually that only happens between 1st and 2nd with me, but thats because of Netrual being in the middle. Just power shift 4th to 5th problem solved, as long as its done correctly.

I get the 4 -5 false neutral every once in a while too. Less now than I used to. I think part of it was not fully letting the shift lever come down after the 4th gear shift. Maybe try that. Somehow it gets better with time, just by knowing that it happens you get a bit more positive on that shift.

I used to get that false neutral between 4-5 too, and sometimes even between 3-4. But I learned from others here that if you train your toe to hold the shifter up till you let the clutch out, instead of just clicking it up, it rarely misses the next gear.
