Next Best Fit? (Rear Tire)
03/25/07 at 13:37:11

Hi everyone ... am having trouble sourcing a stock-size Rear Tire to replace my original 140/80-15 rubber.

Looking for suggestions on what is the "next best fit" for a rear tire ... sizes & brands ... advantages, disadvantages?

Appreciate any/all input on this.

BTW my '03 Savage is bone stock.

Thanks!  8) Grin

I put a 140/90 on it last summer and liked it a lot.  There was room enough on the sides and it added a little to the overall ratio.  I had less than a 1000 on it when I sold the wheel a couple of months ago.

When mine wears out I'll be going with a 130/90-15.

I've had a 130/90/15 on my '04 for several hundred miles and I'm very pleased with it. It handles great, though as I've stated before I'm  not a peg-dragger.

forgive my ignorance, but in the past I've always swapped a tire for like size when old one needs replacing.

but what is difference between a 130/90-15 & a 140/90-15 & how does each effect gearing?

thanks george

130/90-15 is just a hairs width taller, but a better fit for the rim width.  You wouldn't notice any change on the speedo.

Dunlop is generous enough to list mounted tire sizes:

K555  140/80-15, 3.0" rim, 24.17" tall, 5.87" wide Dia. +0.00%
D404  130/90-15, 3.0" rim, 23.95" tall, 5.15" wide Dia. -0.91%
D404  140/90-15, 3.5" rim, 24.73" tall, 5.85" wide Dia. +2.32
491E2 140/90-15, 3.0" rim, 25.10" tall, 5.70" wide Dia. +3.85%
K 627  140/90-15, 3.5" rim, 25.35" tall, 5.59" wide Dia. +4.88%

As you can see, even from the same manufacturer the same size tires are quite different in size.  The same tire on different size rims will change in diameter and width.  The rim of the Savage is only 2.75" wide.
