too much oil?
03/20/07 at 18:29:17

the stealership worked on my bike the other day.  while they had it they changed the oil.  now when i look at the site glass with the bike level and upright the sight glass is full and then some. Shocked According to one pic i saw on this site that would be overfull.  Is this right ???  also i have noticed my clutch seems to be slipping some from time to time.  also maybe due to being overful ???

Did you warm-up the engine then wait for 1 minutes before checking the oil? If you didn't, you should read oil level at or a bit above the top mark.

Yep...good point.  Might have been the custodian at the dealership getting some training Tongue

Drain some out in something clean, and pour the right amount back in.

Nah, the janitor has probably worked there longer and knows more about motorcycles than the mechanics.  I overfilled mine when I first got it (read the instructions weeks later) -- I suspect that the overfilling caused my plug leak.

I have yet to figure out a way to check it myself & hold up the bike. Must be a circus contortionist to do that one.

It must be a cultural thing... or they're laughing their arse's off.

Tried the mirror thing, pretty hard to see.  Light has to be just right, forget it at night.

Blocking up the kick stand seems to work best for me.
Block up kick stand to point where any more will tip it over.  Then you can steady the bike with one hand (in case of a breeze, earthquake, etc.) bend over and check.   Grin

Aw, come on...let's not start some kind of myth here.  I can see that statement coming back in some newbie topic next year..."I read in some post that the plug leak..." Tongue

You and I have the same bike, we both had the leak...I've never overfilled it.  That silly plug is the problem.

You have a good sense of humor Smiley

So easy, even an old guy can do it!!!

Are you guys trying to say that an old guy with 2 bad disks can get on the floor, pull the bike upright by the handlebar, and check the level, but no one else can ???

If you're really worried put it in gear, so it won't roll.  I check the oil level from the same position that I fill it.  Sitting on my butt.  Much easier that way Grin

I get Kathe to straddle the bike so I can get down on floor & check oil, safe in knowledge it won't fall over on me!

(if I were chauvenistic I'd say that was what wives were for, but as I'm not, I won't!) Smiley

Doesn't her leg make it hard to see the oil level?  Your motive might not be the same, but that's understandable. Tongue
