play in the rear belt pulley

Hello Guys. maybe some one can help. I just bought a 2001 650, with 18,000 miles. You can feel a little play from side to side in the rear wheel pulley. Is this normal or bad. If bad , is it hard to fix . please advise . Thank you.

I've tried fixing mine with new drive cushions and it didn't seem to make much difference. I think it leads to the squeak I get from the belt most of the time. I can watch it shift from side to side under drive and coast when I run it on jack while on the lift. I've thought about having a better bushing made for the pulley hub so it fits closer to the axle. The pulley is mounted on rubber bushings and it should flex. That's a good thing and it's supposed to do that. Makes a smoother ride.
If you ever find you have damaged bushings or find the bearing feels bad (like during your next brake job), that would be different but at 18K I don't think you have anything to worry about. It ain't broke. Don't fix it.
They've been mounting sprockets and pulleys with bushings for decades

Oh yeah, because of the bushings, don't waste your time trying to make the belt run true center on the pulley. Just set the adjusters evenly on the axle with the proper tension on the belt and ride.

You're welcome...
And by the way, I'm guilty of jacking up the rear wheel and trying to adjust the belt to run true center, until I went "Doh!"
